At a recent press conference, designer Phan Dang Hoang shared his excitement about returning to Milan Fashion Week later this September to debut his newest collection titled “LACQUER,” inspired by Vietnamese lacquer paintings, particularly those by famed artist Nguyen Gia Tri.
Nguyen Gia Tri is a pioneering figure known for integrating traditional lacquer techniques into modern art. Drawing from the meticulous detail in Tri’s works, Hoang aimed to celebrate the beauty and craftsmanship of the artist’s hands - the birthplace of creativity.
The “LACQUER” collection includes 30 designs, crafted from fundamental visual forms and refined through complex construction techniques. The pieces aim to tell a fashion story that is "both still and dynamic, with depth in simplicity."
Each piece in the collection is built through multi-layered fabric treatments, evoking the visual texture and depth of lacquer paintings - an art form renowned for its shimmering surface and hidden depth.
“Growing up in a family that deeply appreciated art, my designs have always been inspired by Vietnam’s cultural aesthetics, especially through the lens of influential national painters,” said the 2000-born designer.
Hoang recalled first seeing Nguyen Gia Tri’s artworks as a child, an experience that deeply moved him. The paintings, rich in emotion and rooted in Vietnamese landscapes and people, planted the seed for his creative vision.
All garments in the “LACQUER” collection are handcrafted and made from various traditional materials such as Lanh My A silk, natural silk, and linen. This time, Hoang is introducing vibrant, fiery tones like red and gold into his palette.
“I resonate with Nguyen Gia Tri’s pioneering spirit,” he said. “I believe love for one's homeland can be expressed in many creative ways. Through this collection, I hope international audiences will experience the cultural soul of Vietnam.”
Phan Dang Hoang graduated from the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, Italy. He has previously presented collections at Milan Fashion Week - one of the world’s four premier fashion events.
His accolades include the “Young Face in Culture” award at the VTV Awards 2025, “Breakthrough Designer of the Year” by Luxuo Asia Awards, and “Promising Talent” from the Black Carpet Awards at Milan Fashion Week.
