The Asian World Film Festival is an annual event that has been held in Los Angeles, California (USA) since 2015. This year the festival took place on November 1-11 with the participation of nearly 100 movies from more than 40 countries. “Phuong Khau” was one of three Vietnamese films presented at the festival, besides The Tale of Kieu, and Bo Gia (Papa).

This was the first time the organizer introduced a prize for the original series category with Phuong Khau from Vietnam and Squid Game from South Korea competing. This is also the first time that AWFF presented awards for series.

At the Vietnam Night event held on November 6, Vietnamese director Huynh Tuan Anh received the “Best Director of the Year” award.

Executive and Program Director of AWFF Georges Jojo Chamchoum said the jury board had been delighted by the ancient Vietnamese costumes portrayed in the film and the director of “Phuong Khau” had contributed to a diversity of Asian cultural colors, and these efforts deserved to be encouraged.

"Phuong Khau is still very young compared to the great works of big Asian cinema industries. I would like to give all the glory and my gratitude to each member contributing to creating Phuong Khau. And I personally need to strive and learn a lot," director Huynh Tuan Anh said after the awards ceremony on November 6.

Phuong Khau is an original drama series based on royal life during the Nguyen Dynasty, the country’s last feudal rulers. It is set in Hue Imperial Palace and tells the story of concubines during the reign of King Thieu Tri who ruled from 1841 to 1847. The 11-episode drama cost VND15 billion (over US$650,000) and has received more than 2.2 million views on YouTube.
