Vietnamese fighters to defend vovinam title

The World Vovinam Championship will welcome 21 delegations to compete for titles from July 29 through August 2 in Algeria.

More than 250 athletes, referees and officials have registered to join this fourth tournament.

Viet Nam, as the native country of the martial art, will send a squad of 22 athletes and are the top candidates to be the overall winner.

Artists will compete in 74 disciplines, of both performance and combat events.

Two years ago, Viet Nam topped the championships with 18 gold and two bronze medals.

Viet Nam win second match at VTV Int'l Volleyball Cup

Viet Nam defeated the Chinese Nanjing University team 25-14, 25-18, 25-15 in their second match at the International Women's Volleyball Tournament – VTV Cup, yesterday in Bac Lieu Province.

It was the hosts' second win at the annual tournament, helping them move closer to the semi-final round.

In another match, Thailand's U23 squad easily won 10-25, 13-25, 21-25 over the Philippines.

Thailand, who lost their previous match to China's Liaoning, will meet Viet Nam in the next match today.

Also yesterday, Liaoning defeated North Korea 25-22, 23-25 and 19-25.

Liaoning will next play Nanjing.

S Korea's Kang wins billiards tournament

World's No 9 ranked Kang Dong-koong won the International 3-carom Cushion Open, which closed yesterday in Binh Duong Province.

Kang, from South Korea, defeated Do Nguyen Trung Hau of HCM City 40-23 in the final match to pocket a bonus of VND 50 million (US$2,300).

A bronze medal went to another Korean cueist, Cho Jae-ho, the world's No 6 ranked player.

This year's tournament lured 64 competitors, four of whom were foreigners.

Young players test skills at Da Nang ITF event

Young athletes will take part in the International Tennis Federation's Junior Circuit in Da Nang City, as the main round begins today, July 27.

Players are from many different countries including the US, the Philippines, Russia and South Korea.

They will compete in four categories of boys' and girls' singles and doubles.

The winners will receive points to raise their positions in the world junior rankings.

Viet Nam has three representatives in the girls' singles and eight in the boys'.

The tournament will close on August 2.
