At these supermarkets, the juicy fruit is priced at US$3.99 per pint, or VND200,000 per kilogram. The price is rather competitive compared to fresh lychee imported from China and Mexico which is being sold at the Asian market in San Francisco for about VND259,000 per kilogram.
The fresh lychee imported from Vietnam with the brand Golden Lychee has been available in US supermarkets since June 30. It has been distributed by Dragonberry Produce Inc. and is now popular among US consumers especially on the occasion of US Independence Day (July 4).
Safeway and Albertsons are the largest supermarket chains on the West Coast of the United States, housing 913 supermarkets, and over 300 supermarkets respectively.
Earlier in June a 1.08-tonne consignment of fresh lychee from the northern province of Bac Giang had reached the US for the first time, according to the Vietnam Trade Office.
The fruit has been sold at several supermarkets in Houston, Texas, since June 21, with a pack of 11 pounds (or five kilograms) costing US$140, or VND3.3 million.
In the past Vietnam only exported frozen lychee to the US.
