The Vietnamese futsal team have set a target of securing a place in the FIFA Futsal World Cup.

The gathering is taking place only four days after the conclusion of the HDBank National Cup 2020, with 21 players being summoned by head coach Pham Minh Giang

It is not so surprising that the Thai Son Nam Club, reigning champions of both the National Championship and the National Cup, continue to contribute the most players to the Vietnamese national squad, notably including Ho Van Y – the best goalkeeper of the two aforementioned tournaments, Nguyen Minh Tri – the most valuable player in the National Championship, and Nguyen Thinh Phat – top scorer in the National Cup.

In addition, Khong Dinh Hung – a pillar of Savinest Sanatech Khanh Hoa and the most valuable player of the National Cup 2020 – is also one of the names that should not be overlooked, alongside other young faces Nguyen Van Hieu (Da Nang FC), Huynh Mi Woen (Cao Bang) and Tu Minh Quang (Thai Son Bac).

This is the second gathering of the Vietnamese futsal squad in 2020. As planned, in the third week of the camp, Pham Minh Giang’s side will play a friendly match with a domestic futsal club.

The AFC Futsal Championship 2020 was originally scheduled to be played in Turkmenistan between February 26 and March 8, 2020. It has been postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic before being officially moved to 2021. The tournament will act as AFC qualifiers for the World Cup, with the top five teams making it through to the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania.

Vietnam have been drawn in Group A, together with Turkmenistan, Oman and Tajikistan. This group is considered a favourable one, with coach Pham Minh Giang’s side being fully capable of gaining the top spot.

This is the target fixed upon by the Vietnamese squad, because by finishing first in the group stage, they will be able to avoid a possible quarterfinal clash with powerhouse Japan, thus increasing their chances of advancing into the semi-finals. Nhan Dan
