Vietnamese golfer Nguyen Thao My has secured a berth at the 2015 International Junior Golf Championships, to be held in the United States from July 16-31, as a result of her successful performances at two qualifying tournaments in Thailand in January and March.
The event – one of the largest and best-known junior golf tournaments in the world – will offer a good opportunity for young golfers to accumulate points and improve their ranking in the annual junior world standings.
Contestants will compete in age groups 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18 for boys, and 10-12, 13-14 and 15-18 for girls, with Thao My playing in the 15-18 age division.
Thao My is among a number of young athletes receiving long-term support from the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The 17-year-old is currently participating in a training course at the Green Valley golf club in Thailand and pursuing her studies at the American International School in Bangkok.
Thao My was crowned champion of the 2014 National Women’s Open Golf Championship hosted in Hai Phong city on November 15 and 16. Two months earlier, My was the youngest Vietnamese athlete (16 years old) to compete in the 17th Asian Games in the Republic of Korea.
Prior to arriving in the US for the international junior competition, My will join other members of the national team including Truong Chi Quan, Do Le Gia Dat, Ngo Bao Nghi and Tran Chuong Duong, to compete in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore from June 6-12.
