‘Kata queen’ Nguyen Hoang Ngan remains Vietnam’s top medal hope at this year’s competition.

Earlier on September 7, Ngan took the women’s individual Kata gold medal at the Karate1 Premier League - Istanbul 2014 in Turkey, beating Italian Terryana D'Onofrio 5-0 in their final clash.

Reigning Asiad Kata champion, Japan’s Kiyou Shimizu promises to be a tough obstacle for Hoang Ngan on her way to the overall crown.

The five-day world championship has brought together around 900 athletes from at least 107 nations, vying for titles in 16 existing categories.

The event functions as an important rehearsal for Vietnamese martial artists ahead of the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore next year.
