On the afternoon of December 31, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son visited the South Korean Embassy on behalf of the Vietnamese Government. He offered flowers, signed the condolence book, and extended sympathies to the victims' families and the South Korean government.
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed profound sorrow and shock upon hearing about the Boeing 737-800 crash on December 29 at Muan Airport in southwest South Korea.
Speaking on behalf of the Vietnamese Government and people, he conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Government, people of South Korea, and especially the families of the victims.
Vietnamese leaders expressed their belief that South Korea will overcome this immense loss, swiftly address the aftermath of the accident, and help victims' families stabilize their lives.
Earlier in the day, on behalf of the National Assembly, Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh, also Chairwoman of the Vietnam-Korea Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group, visited the South Korean Embassy to express condolences.
National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh extended deep sympathies to the South Korean Parliament, people, and especially the victims' families. She expressed confidence that South Korea would overcome the tragedy and quickly address the accident's consequences to restore normalcy for the victims' families.
Additionally, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu visited the South Korean Embassy to pay respects on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
South Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Choi Youngsam expressed gratitude to Vietnamese leaders for their condolences and visits. He emphasized that the compassion and support from Vietnam would bolster South Korea's resolve during this difficult time.
Prior to these visits, Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had sent messages of condolence to South Korea’s Acting President Choi Sang Mok.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man also sent a condolence message to his South Korean counterpart Woo Won Shik, while Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son sent a message to South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae Yul.
The Boeing 737-800 plane operated by Jeju Air crashed during landing on December 29, leaving 179 of the 181 passengers dead.
Only two flight attendants survived the tragedy. South Korea declared a national mourning period from December 29 to January 4, 2025.
