The longans have been harvested in the growing area which fully meets GlobalGAP standards, along with the various requirements for export to the Thai market.
According to Cong Thuong (Industry and Trade) newspaper, the Vietnamese longans on Tops supermarket shelves are from the Mekong delta city of Can Tho.
The juicy fruit is priced at THB518 per kg, equivalent to around VND350,000 per kg. To mark its debut, a promotional pricing strategy has been adopted, with one kilogram of the fruit now costing just VND230,000 in Thai supermarkets.
Up to 2.3 tonnes of longan from the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam are expected to be sold in the Tops retail system of Thailand’s Central Retail Group as part of this occasion.
Earlier, Central Retail Vietnam and its partners had reached a deal following negotiations to promote the export of Vietnamese longans to the Thai market through retail channels.
The sales of Vietnamese longans coincided with the Vietnamese Week in Thailand 2023 – the Magic Taste of Vietnam – which has been organised by Central Retail Group and opened at CentralwOrld on the evening of August 16.
More than 100 Vietnamese businesses from various Mekong Delta provinces and Ho Chi Minh City are therefore showcasing their products at the event in order to seek further business and investment connectivity opportunities. The trade fair is expected to attract around 500,000 arrivals.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, longans are currently mainly consumed domestically. Although Vietnamese longans have been exported to several major markets, including China, Australia, the United States, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, and Japan, the export volume remains modest, especially with regard to fresh longans.
The Vietnamese longan export turnover in 2021 reached US$23.3 million but fell to US$13.9 million in 2022.
