The China Daily quoted a veteran researcher on Vietnam at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) as saying that the relationship between Vietnam and China is essentially unique and important, being the relationship between the two ruling parties which plays a navigating role in the overall bilateral relationship.

The article in this newspaper gives figures that highlight economic relations between Vietnam and China when their annual bilateral trade surpassed US$230 billion in 2021. The two countries have also had regular high-level contacts this year to promote cooperation.

The article reiterated the phone call between Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Premier Li Keqiang. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that China is elated to see Vietnam's steady economic growth, helping to maintain the stability of industry and supply chains in Asia.

Li Keqiang affirmed his nation’s readiness to ensure smooth clearance of border gates, expand the import of high-quality agricultural products of Vietnam, welcome back Vietnamese students, and increase direct flights between the two countries.

The Global Times of the People's Daily, published an editorial featuring the significance of China-Vietnam relations. The editorial said that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will be the first foreign leader to visit China since the 20th National Party Congress.

The editorial affirmed that the special relationship between Vietnam and China lies in the special friendship, which is a valuable asset of the two parties and two peoples.

Since the normalization of bilateral relations in the early 1990s, the two parties have maintained the custom of exchanging congratulatory messages and high-level visits after party congresses.

After the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, right after being elected as the General Secretary for the second term, Xi Jinping made his first oversea visit to Vietnam.

This visit by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong aims to continue the tradition and demonstrate the mutual trust and friendship between the two parties.

Furthermore Vietnam and China are two neighbors with a common culture, and both countries are at the stage of development.

China and Vietnam also always adhere to the policy of long-term stability toward the future, good neighborliness and comprehensive cooperation in the spirit of "good neighbours, good friends, good comrades and good partners.

The editorial affirmed that the bilateral friendship between the two countries has reached a new stage of a comprehensive strategic partnership. This meeting between the two leaders will certainly tighten the Vietnam-China friendship.

The South China Morning Post, based in Hong Kong, emphasized the invitation of Chinese Party General Secretary Xi Jinping to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong right after the 20th National Congress ended, with Xi Jinping being re-elected for the third term which affirmed Vietnam's position in China's diplomatic concerns.

The article quoted international relations researcher Kalvin Fung Ka-shing of Waseda University in Tokyo as saying that the visit reflects the friendship, solidarity and ideological relationship of both sides, which helps the two countries overcome all obstacles.

The Shanghai Observer of the Liberation Daily, the mouthpiece of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, in an in-depth analysis of the visit, stated that this is the first visit by the country's top foreign leader to visit China after the 20th National Party Congress, which is also the first host diplomatic activity after the new leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was elected, thus capturing the international attention.

The article quoted Liu Qing, vice president and senior research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies and Xu Liping, a research fellow on Southeast Asian studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that since the normalization of relations in the early 1990s, exchanges between the two parties have continuously deepened. Their close relationship has become a "clear feature" in the development of relations between the two sides.

Xu said that the visit to Vietnam by Party General Secretary Xi Jinping in 2017 and the upcoming visit to China by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sends three messages: showing the speciality and importance of the bilateral relationship, their special affection, and the guiding role of party exchanges in the Vietnam-China relationship.

According to Liu, both sides treasure the relationship between the two parties and countries. Strengthening political trust and promoting economic and trade cooperation will top the agenda.

The trip is of "special significance", researcher Hua said, from the perspective of regional cooperation, because this year is the first year China established a comprehensive strategic partnership with ASEAN. Therefore, "the visit will usher in a good start" in deepening strategic cooperation between China and ASEAN, he said.
