Graduating from the HCM City University of Technology and Education majoring in Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications in 2011, Thien then obtained a master’s degree.

After that, he received a scholarship to pursue a doctorate in computer science from Kyung Hee University in Sywon University in South Korea in 2018.

Now he is a postdoctoral student at the Kumoh National Institute of Technology.

Since 2014, Thien has had 58 scientific articles published in international journals. He also has presented two international reports at conferences on telecommunications, and is the co-author of three inventions.

Thien believes that leading the South Korean state-level scientific research project “Hierarchical Visual Deep Framework for High-Risk Physical Behavior Attention” might be why the Golden Ball Award council honored him.

The project is funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea from June 2019 to May 2022, at VND1 billion a year.

The research project considers the application of AI and Big Data in videos, with the aim of discovering dangerous behaviors.

This could be the behavior of climbing onto a chair and reaching for something. At first, the machine identifies if the figure in the frame is a person or an object. After that, it compares to data in its system. If the behavior is considered dangerous or unsafe, it gives a warning by sending a message or playing a sound.

When Duc was a doctoral student, he was a member of the research team of the project “Mining Minds Core Technology Exploiting Personal Big Data” funded by the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Thien said he has made great efforts in his path to achievement. He once experienced a difficult period, when he felt stress as the research directions followed by his professor and himself were not the same.

However, he solved this and many other problems by reading and learning new knowledge. During four years as a doctoral student, he mostly lived in the laboratory and only returned to his rented room on weekends to wash his clothes.

In addition to his research, Thien is also a visiting editor for ISI Remote Sensing (IF: 4.509) and acts as a critic for Information Sciences, IEEE Transaction on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Transaction on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Access, and IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems, Sensors.

He plans to return to Vietnam after the project in South Korea ends.
