VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese Grand Masters Quang Liem and Truong Son will compete with each other in a quarter-final game of the 9th Cap d’Agde rapid chess festival in France.

 

Current champion Hikaru Nakamura (USA) with Elo 2733 ranks first in group A with 6.5 points, followed by Bu Xiangzhi from China with 5.5 points.

 

Vietnam’s Truong Son, with four points (two winning, four draws and one lost games) ranks  third. In the qualifier round, Son, 20, (Elo 2633) was trounced by Hikaru Nakamura, 22, tied with the world top female chess player Judit Polgar (Elo 2682, Hungary) and defeated former world champ Anatoly Karpov, 59, (Elo 2619).

 

In group B, Vasily Ivanchuk, 41, (Elo 2754, Ukraine) ranks first, with 5.5 points. Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem, 19 (Elo 2694) is on the second position, with four games won and three draws.

 

The quarter-final round will take place on October 30, with the following pairs: Hikaru Nakamura - Jon Ludvig Hammer; Yannick Pelletier - Xiangzhi Bu; Truong Son – Quang Liem; Judith Polgar - Vasily Ivanchuk.

 

The Cap d'Agd Chess Festival’s total bonus is Eur48,000, including Eur16,000 for the champion. The festival will close on October 31. This is the first time Vietnam attends the event.
