Professor Duong Quang Trung, a native of Quang Nam, Vietnam, has been appointed editor-in-chief of IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, a prestigious journal published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Starting his two-year term on January 1, Prof. Trung becomes the editor-in-chief of the largest journal in IEEE’s portfolio of 336 scientific publications.

The journal boasts an Impact Factor of 34.4 and a CiteScore of 80.2, placing it at the top of nearly 700 journals in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, according to SCImago rankings.

An illustrious academic journey

Prof. Duong Quang Trung was born in 1979 in Hoi An, Quang Nam Province.

He graduated with distinction from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology under Vietnam National University before earning a full scholarship from the Korean government for his master’s studies.

He completed his Ph.D. in Telecommunications Systems in 2012 on a full scholarship in Sweden.

In early 2013, Prof. Trung joined the faculty of Queen’s University Belfast in the UK, one of the country’s top 20 universities, bypassing the postdoctoral stage.

By August 2020, he was promoted to full professor at Queen’s University Belfast - one of the fastest appointments in the university’s nearly 200-year history, achieved in just over six years.

International recognition

Prof. Trung has received numerous accolades for his groundbreaking research:

Best Research Paper Awards at the world’s largest telecommunications conference, IEEE Globecom, in 2016 and 2019.

Research Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, valued at USD 1 million, awarded from 2015 to 2020. This highly competitive award was given to only eight researchers across all scientific fields in the UK that year.

Newton Prize 2017, a prestigious award recognizing innovative research that strengthens global partnerships.

In 2020, Prof. Trung was appointed as one of four Research Chairs by the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, further solidifying his status as a leading figure in his field.
