Vinh jumps to second in world rankings

Vietnamese marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh is placed second in the latest men's 50m pistol world rankings by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).

South Korea's Jin Jongoh is placed first, followed by Mikec Damir of Serbia in third place.

On May 15, 41-year-old Vinh won the bronze medal in the same category at the ISSF World Shooting Cup in Fort Benning, the United States.

Last year, Vinh was placed first in the men's 10m pistol event by ISSF. This is the first time in Vietnamese sporting history that a Vietnamese shooter has jumped to the top spot in world rankings.

Vinh is currently Viet Nam's most promising candidate to win gold medals in both individual and team events at the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

At the 27th Games in Myanmar two years ago, Vinh won three gold medals.     

Gia Lai win futsal tournament for disadvantaged children

Gia Lai won the Ton Hoa Sen Cup by defeating Ha Noi 5-1 at the 16th Futsal Tournament for Disadvantaged Children that ended in HCM City on May 31.

The winning team also received VND30 million (US$1,400).

Eight teams, divided into two groups, participated in the tournament that began on May 26.

The event's 10 best players will win a trip to Thailand, where they will play a friendly match with Thailand U14 in late June.

Women's volleyball team rewarded

The Viet Nam Volleyball Federation rewarded the national women's volleyball team with VND250 million (US$11,900), after they finished fifth at the recent Asian Women's Volleyball Championship in Tianjin, China.

It is the best rank that Viet Nam have earned at the continental level.

Previously, they had finished sixth in the 2003 and 2013 tournaments.

At the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, the women's volleyball team are in Group B with Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The men's team are also in Group B alongside Cambodia, Indonesia and the hosts Singapore.

The competitions will begin on June 9.
