Vietnamese silk paintings and products are being displayed at an exhibition that opened at the Oakland Asian Cultural Centre in San Francisco, the US, on September 20.

The exhibition introduces 40 silk paintings by 29 Vietnamese painters from different generations, from the late artist Nguyen Tien Chung (1914-1976), a graduate of the Indochina Fine Arts College, now the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, to veteran artists Vi Kien Minh, Lo An Quang and Nguyen Thu, together with younger painters Le Thuy, Lam Thanh, and Vu Dinh Tuan.

The paintings feature the artists’ views on cultural practices and the fine traditions and history of Vietnam.

Works on display also include silk products from Vietnam’s longstanding silk villages, such as Van Phuc (Hanoi) and Tan Chau (An Giang province).

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vietnamese General Consul in San Francisco Ho Xuan Son expressed his hope that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism would organise further cultural and artistic activities in the US, as well as other foreign countries, stressing that culture has proven to be the most effective way to bring people from different countries together and increase their mutual understanding, while such events would also facilitate Vietnamese tourism development.

Donna K.Khorsheed, Director of the Oakland Asian Cultural Centre, said that she would visit Vietnam in the near future to admire the beauty of the natural landscape, as well as the daily lives of the Vietnamese people, which are featured on the paintings on display at the exhibition.

The ten-day exhibition is co-hosted by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Consulate General of Vietnam in San Francisco as a highlighted event in the programme to promote Vietnamese arts, culture and tourism, as well as its land and people, to international friends.
