VietNamNet Bridge – American Photographer Franey Miller’s work featuring a model wearing a costume designed similar to a Vietnamese traditional long dress (ao dai) has faced a strong opposition from Vietnamese facebookers.
Vietnamese facebookers voiced their objections about this photograph. |
US Model Baska Mroz is captured wearing an ao dai without trousers. The photo was among the works of 17-year old Franey Miller’s new collection posted on her facebook on February 26 which had a great response from her friends for its creativity.
One irate Facebook-user Nguyen Le Thuy Vy said, “You use our traditional costume for your artistic work, but you might make the world think that our country is so poor so that we don’t even have trousers to wear?”

Another facebooker Phuong Nguyen said, “I am very glad to see that you care about our traditional costume, but it seems that you don’t understand ao dai. Fashion is about the freedom to be creative, but you shouldn’t miss basic things about a country’s culture.” Some other people said that when taking a photo relating to a country’s culture, the photographer should learn about its culture.
Ms Miller was eventually forced to remove the photo from her fanpage.
The photographer said that, “This photo was not made as an interpretation of Vietnam or Vietnamese culture in any way. I apologise for any offence that may have come of this, but please understand and respect the art. From here on out I will do my best to be more conscious of cultures and my impacts on them.”
She also added that she just took the photo and the model’s costume was arranged by stylist Ashley Barlow.
