Ms. Uyen, manager of a media company in District 1 (HCM City), started learning English on the app during the social distancing period. At that time, she was at home a lot and thought, so the mother decided to spend 15-30 minutes a day taking extra lessons. At present, although she does not study regularly as before, Uyen still takes advantage of some evenings during the week to study English on the app.

To encourage her daughter to explore foreign languages together, she gave her a condition that she had to open an English app for 15 minutes before she could play games on her phone for 15 minutes.

According to Duolingo statistics, the number of daily active users in Vietnam almost doubled from 2020 to 2021, especially during the pandemic, an amazing growth without any media campaign.

According to a survey in 2021 by market research company Q&Me, Vietnamese learn foreign languages to travel and discover other countries (32%); to understand foreign books, movies and music (24%); and learn about other foreign cultures (22%).

Duolingo’s survey this period shows that many people turned to learning a foreign language for a simpler reason during the pandemic: they wanted to connect with the people they love, and friends and cultures that keep them motivated during difficult times.

According to Duolingo, in Vietnam, Chinese and Japanese are the most popular choices on the application. On average, each user spends more than 17 minutes a day using the app, usually at 9pm.

Duolingo's global data shows that in the Vietnamese market, Korean is the fourth most popular language chosen. The number of users wanting to learn the language doubled when the Korean series Squid Game was released.

In addition to Korean, the series "Emily in Paris" is also an inspiration for learning French around the world. According to a Duolingo report, the number of people learning French increased by 30% between 2020 and 2021.
