All 23 Vietnamese students taking part in the 15th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) brought home medals, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced on October 3.

The team picked up eight gold, 10 silver and five bronze medals – which was touted as the highest achievement the country has ever made in this international competition.

This was the fourth time Vietnam joined the event, with all 69 Vietnamese competitors in the past three years winning medals.

The four gold medals in mathematics this year went to Nguyen Dinh Kien from Hong Bang Secondary School, Hai Phong city, Tran Bao Duy from Hanoi’s Ngo Sao Secondary School, and two students from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted - Ngo Chi Kien and Trinh Anh Minh.

Nguyen Dinh Kien was also awarded with Best Theory prize in maths.

The four gold medals in science belonged to Nguyen Nhat Minh and Phan Vu Nguyen Khai -- both from the Hanoi’s Ngoi Sao Secondary School, Dinh Pham Nguyen Hang from Hanoi-Amsterdam school, and Nghiem Xuan Son from Nguyen Truong To Secondary School.

The students were expected to arrive home later on October 4.

IMSO was an annual competition for students under 13 years old and this year’s event was hosted by China and from September 28 – October 4.

The event attracted 400 students, arranged into 25 teams from 22 countries and territories.

Vietnam is slated to organse IMSO next year.-VNA
