The first competition was held in 2004 in Jakarta, Indonesia with the aim to encourage students to learn more about science and to find young talents. It is also a chance for countries to exchange experiences and find co-operative opportunities.

The students have to take three exams including multiple-choice examination, theoretical examination and practical examination. They are given 240 minutes for each exam which include questions about physics, chemistry and biology.

IJSO is a prestigious competition with top scientists on the judging panel. This year, the questions focus on Qatar's typical weather, nature and culture in particular and the Arabian Gulf in general. The 16th IJSO was held by Qatar's Ministry of Education and Qatar University.

This is the ninth year that the Hanoi Department of Education was asked submit a national team to attend the competition. Six students were selected after two rounds of contests. Dtinews
