Vietnamese gymnasts won four golds and four silvers alone.

“Vietnam met strong rivals such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, but we overcame psychological pressure to beat them and win golds,” said Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, head coach of the national gymnastics team.

Ngo Thi Khanh Ny also bagged a gold medal in the women’s 800m, while Le Tien Long bagged a gold in the men’s 1,500m.

Vietnamese athletes will continue to compete in the athletics, table tennis and swimming events.

After three days of competition, Vietnam rank fourth in the medals table with a total of 12 golds, eight silvers and six bronzes.

Malaysia lead with 24 golds, 25 silvers and 20 bronzes, followed by Indonesia and Thailand.

Vietnam sent 60 athletes to compete at the event, which attracted the participation of 4,000 young athletes from 10 nations including Brunei, Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

Athletes are competing in 11 categories including, athletics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, squash and aerobics.

The event, which will last until July 26, is an annual competition which aims to enhance friendship among students in the Southeast Asian region. It also seeks to promote ASEAN solidarity through sports and provide opportunities for athletes to engage in cultural exchanges.
