With a population of 1.4 billion, China is an important market for Vietnamese agricultural products. However, this huge market is no longer easy. Instead of importing all kinds of agricultural products, since 2018, China has changed its rules.
China has invested in 29 plywood projects worth over US$150 million in Vietnam, becoming the country’s largest plywood investor, according to Ngo Sy Hoai, vice chairman of the Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association.
Despite the first half of the year seeing Vietnamese export turnover to China only reaching a mere US$34.8 billion, China retained its place as the country’s largest import market, according to the General Statistics Office.
Hundreds of trucks carrying fruits are now stuck at the Vietnam-China border gate of Tan Thanh in Lang Son Province.
Vietnamese exports of agricultural products must meet food safety, quality and traceability requirements to China which now requires that exports be sent through official channels only.
