Rhapsody Philharmonic attracts the young audiences, thanks to its connection of pop music, symphony and traditional music, which help the audience easily enhance the music sense.
The orchestra was immediately praised after its first show for students at the Vietnam National Institute of Music last September.
“Rhapsody waters the dried soul of people who are working day and night with numbers and programming,” said Huong Ly, a programmer from Hanoi.
Student Pham The Anh, from the Hanoi Polytechnic, said: “I had thought that symphony is difficult to understand, but once attending a show by Rhapsody, I was enchanted by symphony. They played classical music in a different and emotionally way.”
The orchestra’s Song Ha said that the secret to make Rhapsody’s new vitality is mixing classical music with traditional music. Classical music works are played in a creative way through the use of traditional musical instruments.
“There are many young symphony orchestras in the world but to build up our own characters, a Vietnamese orchestra, we use traditional musical instruments to play classical works,” Ha said.
At the Long Bien Bridge Festival 2010 in Hanoi, Rhapsody impressed an audiences of over 4,000 by playing its own music works by sao meo (bamboo flute), dan bau (Vietnamese monochord), dan tranh (16-chord zither), violin and DJ.
Composer Tran Manh Hung from the Vietnam Musicians’ Association praised the orchestra as “heroes of Vietnamese music in the future”.
The orchestra not only plays classical music and Michael Jackson’s music by its own style, it also composes symphonies with Vietnamese. To date, the orchestra has composed 6 symphonies.
Many members of Rhapsody are young music talents of Vietnam, who participated in the Southeast Asia and young Southeast Asia symphony orchestras. All members are outstanding students of the Vietnam National Institute of Music, and some of them are instrumentalists of the Vietnam National and Hanoi Symphony Orchestras.
Many instrumentalists won international prizes, for example Pham Khanh Toan (22) with the third prize of the Concour 2010 competition, Dao Hong Nhung (19) with the second prize of the Concour 2010, Nguyen Thien Minh (18) with the first prize of the Concour Autumn 2007 and the first prize of the International Music Competition in Indonesia.
Professionalism and passion are the outstanding characters of Rhapsody. The orchestra not only joins music events at invitation but also organizes its own shows. Each member takes care of a task: designing advertising posters, seeking sponsorship, arranging the show, inviting guests, etc.
The orchestra now has monthly show at the Vietnam National Institute of Music and students are its major audiences.
