‘House for Trees’, a construction designed by Vietnam’s Vo Trong Nghia Architects Company, was named the award winner of ‘House’ category at the World Architecture Festival, being held in Singapore October 1-3.

The Ho Chi Minh City residence comprises of concrete boxes with trees growing on the rooftops. The home’s interior and outer space are shaded by trees in order to create harmony in the green space between inside and outside.

The designers succeeded in addressing the issue of air pollution in a big city like HCM City while helping the house’s owners enjoy fresh air.

It is also the first construction in Vietnam to have exterior walls made of in-situ concrete with bamboo formwork.

Themed ‘Architects and the City’, the festival saw the competition of 200 nominees in the two major categories of Completed Buildings and Future Projects, with each category comprising of more than ten sub-categories including housing, schools, office, commercial mixed-use, health and Culture.

The three-day event also included talks, key-note speakers and networking opportunities, while focusing on the contributions made by architects to cities and how they affect – and are affected by – politics, infrastructure, planning communities and technology.
