VietNamNet Bridge – By this moment, it is sure that Vietnam has failed to achieve its goal of winning 30 cards to the Olympic 2012.

However, 15 - the number calculated by sports officials based on the actual situation at qualifier rounds – is feasible.

At a meeting on March 27, Vice Chair cum Secretary General of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, Mr. Hoang Vinh Gaing, said: “Vietnam has over 40 athletes who can win Olympic tickets, but in sports, calculation is never accurate.”

Mr. Giang’s comment is correct. We can set specific goals to strive for them but goals must be practical, based on Vietnamese athletes’ ability and the tournaments they take part in.

So far, Vietnam has got 11 Olympic cards and 15 is a feasible goal because some Vietnamese athletes will surely get the tickets, which will be announced at suitable time, including: badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh (world’s 10th player); swimmers Hoang Quy Phuoc and Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (who passed the Olympic B standards.

Vietnamese sportsmen will keep competing for other tickets in April and May, at the following tournaments: the Asian Weightlifting Championships; the Asian qualifier round of Olympics 2012 in South Korea from April 26 to 29; world qualifier round for wrestling in China from April 27 to 29; Grand Prix Asia for athletics and boxing qualifier round in May.

If Vietnamese athletes perform as well as they have been, Vietnam can win an additional six or seven cards to make a new landmark.
