VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnamese military telecommunication group (Viettel) has chosen IBM Smarter Computing solutions to build its 3G infrastructures Cameroon.

Based on IBM System X server, the IBM Smarter Storage and the IBM Database 2 softwares will serve as an information technology foundation for Viettel to offer advanced integrated mobile services to millions of new subscribers in the country.

Phung Van Cuong, Viettel representative, said IBM solutions will assist the group to introduce latest telecommunication services in Cameroon, including making video calls while surfing the internet, chatting and playing games with friends online and connecting to multimedia applications via handheld devices or even paying public services or car parking fees.

The introduction of 3G services by Viettel Cameroon S.A.R.L will open up new opportunities for nearly 6 million subscribers in Cameroon by 2017.

Viettel Cameroon S.A.R.L, is a joint venture between Viettel and Bestinver Cameroon S.A.R.L, which is the largest telecommunication group in Cameroon, with its 6,000 staff members and its network covering 81 percent of the country’s total area.

Cameroon now has a population of 20 million with the number of mobile phone subscribers accounting for only 49 percent.

In the near future, Viettel Cameroon will provide IT infrastructure for new mobile services based on Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Billing Systems.
