VietNamNet Bridge - While their parents were at a death anniversary, a big blast occurred on the bank of a canal, killing up to four children and injuring four others.

On the afternoon of December 2, a mortar exploded in Hieu Nghia commune, Vung Liem district of Vinh Long province, killing three boys (6-11 years) and a 4-year-old girl.

The blast also wounded four people, including two men of 42 years old and two boys of 12 and 4 years old. The victims were brought to the Vinh Long and Can Tho Hospitals.

According to the local police, the explosion occurred on the bank of a canal in front of the home of Mr. Nguyen Van Lat, 49, when the family was holding a death anniversary.

At that time, a group of children who had just finished the feast ran out to the bamboo trees in front of the house to play and the unexpected accident occurred.

The authorities initially identified that an 82mm mortar exploded. This mortar was discovered a few years ago when Mr. Lat dredged mud from the canal.

Lat did not tell the authorities about the mortar but threw it under the bamboo trees in front of his house.
