The city's secretariat said the virtual fireworks competition, titled The Legendary Han River, will serve as practice for fireworks teams to test their skills in preparation for the main firework event, which aims to boost tourism in the city.

The virtual fireworks competition is open to people from across the country, overseas Vietnamese and foreign residents living in Viet Nam.

Teams can register to compete in the event today through November 30, while the final round for the best teams will be organised from May 10-30.

The winner will walk away with a VND15 million (US$700) cash prize, while the runner-up and third-place winner will pocket VND10 million ($476) and VND7 million ($333), respectively.

According to the event's judges, each competitor will be given points for skill, creativity, art and technology.

The central city's information and communications department said the virtual fireworks competition is a creativity contest for youngsters studying information technology nationwide.

Da Nang has held the virtual fireworks competition three times.

The city's Han River has been a favourite place to host the International Fireworks competition since 2008.

Last year, Tran Anh Tuan from the Da Nang-based Duy Tan University was named the winner of the virtual fireworks competition.
