The delegation of the National Assembly’s Committee for Science, Technology and Environment had a working session with the Ministry of Science and Technology several days ago, on amending some articles of the Law on Technical Standards and Regulations.

Director of the Authority of Science and Technology Nguyen Khac Lich under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) reported about  standards, measurement and quality work in the ICT industry, and assessed the implementation of laws on standards and regulations. 

Lich mentioned seven problems that the sector is facing when implementing laws and proposed eight solutions to amend or supplement current laws.

According to the Authority of Telecommunications, many new services on digital platforms have arisen. The services are under the management of MIC, but also other ministries. For example, AI applied in health care is under the management of the Ministry of Health, and international commitments in agreements to which Vietnam is a signatory.

New products such as smart refrigerators and machines that measure blood pressure from a distance are also the results of the integration of different sectors. 

The agency believes that there should be regulations on the establishment of an interdisciplinary law compilation board in charge of creating standards and regulations.

At the working session, MIC’s Deputy Minister Phan Tam emphasized the need to strengthen standardization, measurement and quality, as well as Vietnam's participation in the world’s standardization institutions. This this will improve Make in Vietnam products and make them more competitive.

Tam also suggested promoting MRA (mutual recognition agreements) in ASEAN and APEC to take advantage of the testing capacity of foreign testing laboratories.
