After the first five rounds on November 23, Quang Liem had earned two points following one win over Sergey Karjakin (Round 5), two draws with Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Round 2) and Ding Liren (Round 3), and two defeats against Levon Aronian (Round 1) and Anish Giri (Round 4).

Concluding the first day, the Vietnamese chess ace settled for 11th place, level with Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Peter Svidler and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on two points.

To everyone’s surprise, Anish Giri occupied Day 1’s top spot with four points earned from wins over Quang Liem, Karjakin and Vidit Gujrathi, and draws against Vachier-Lagrave and Hikaru Nakamura.
