She has also become the first disabled Vietnamese swimmer to win a medal at an international event.

The 30-year-old swimmer finished second with a time of 1:57.43.

Nhu's result earned her the A standard that will enable her to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil.

"I am so happy with the silver medal. It is not my glory but the Viet Nam's team's labour," the swimmer, who was born in the southern Kien Giang Province, said.

Hopes are also pinned on Asian gold medallist Vo Thanh Tung, who competed in the London Paralympic Games in 2012.

Born in the southern Can Tho Province, Tung is competing in the men's 50m freestyle-S5, 100m freestyle-S5, 200m freestyle-S5 and 50m butterfly-S5, as well as 50m backstroke-S5.

Viet Nam has sent four swimmers to the event, in which 580 swimmers from nearly 70 countries are participating.

This is the second time Viet Nam have taken part in the world event. The championship, previously held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in 2011, will end on July 19.
