VN duo advance to ITF quarter-finals

Nguyen Mau Vinh Quang and Tu Minh Tri are one of two Vietnamese pairs surviving at the ongoing ITF Junior Circuit tournament in HCM City.

The duo on July 21 made a splash when they defeated number four seed John Bryan Decasa Otico and Steven Harianto Poedji 6-4, 7-6(2) in the boys' doubles event.

They will next play Sirawit Daosaengsawang and Daiki Kato in the quarter-final round.

The other pair of Nguyen Nhut Hoang and Stefano Wirawan beat Alester Magalit and Jerome Romualdez 6-2, 2-6, 10-4.

Hoang and Wirawan will play number two seed Hao Sheng Koay and Sri Aakash Reddiyar in the next round.

Earlier, all players of the host country were defeated in the singles events.

Champion Swimmer Vien to receive

Viet Nam Glory Award Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien will be among 15 individuals to receive the Viet Nam Glory Award 2015 for their excellent performances in various aspects of life.

It is the first time a sports person has been honoured at the annual event.

"Vien is being honoured not only for her achievements, but also for her positive influence on young people that comes from her modesty and determination," said Hoang Lam, head of the organising board.

The awards are being organised by the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour, the Central Council for Emulation and Reward and Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper.

The awards ceremony will be held on July 28 in Ha Noi, but Vien will not be able to attend as she is training in the US to prepare for the World Championships in Russia early next month.

Lieu takes yellow jersey with fourth stage win at An Giang Tour

Phan Thi Lieu claimed the yellow jersey after the fourth stage of the An Giang Television Cycling Tournament yesterday.

Lieu of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang won the 117km stage from Soc Trang City to Ca Mau City with a time of 3hr 2.06min, just ahead of Na Ahreum from South Korea's Samyang crew and Phetdarin Somrat from Thailand.

After four stages, Lieu leads the rankings with a total time of 9:09.00, followed by Na and Somrat.

Nguyen Thi That retained the green jersey with 59 points.

In the team rankings, Samyang are in first place with a time of 27:34.29. Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang and Thailand are second and third.

The fifth stage will see cyclists race from Ca Mau to Rach Gia City over 94km.

Women to play friendlies against Chinese Taipei

The national women's football team will play two friendly matches in August against Chinese Taipei to prepare for their second round of Olympic qualifiers.

The games will take place in Ha Noi on August 1 and 4.

Coach Norimatsu Takashi plans to call up 28 players for his squad.

Chinese Taipei are in Group A with Viet Nam, along with Thailand, Jordan and hosts Myanmar.

After the friendlies, Viet Nam will travel to Japan for a training course in September.
