Vietnamese rescuers managed to contain a fire that broke out yesterday on a vessel from Panama anchored in Vung Tau.

The vessel, Golden 168, was carrying 20 sailors and 6,600 tons of coconut powder.

The Viet Nam Maritime Rescue and Co-ordination Centre received a distress signal at around 3am. Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province border police dispatched a boat and rescued all 20 sailors.

The vessel was carrying 11 sailors from Myanmar, five from China, three from Viet Nam and one from Bangladesh.

The vessel departed Nha Trang on February 6, headed for Singapore.

The fire broke out in one of the vessel's storage bunks, according to police.
