GWI actively collects data from 32 countries by asking Internet users which sites they visited during a period via any device. The survey revealed that the United States has the largest share of Facebook users with 15 per cent, followed by India and China with 13 per cent each. Viet Nam is in the 10th position with 3 per cent.

Meanwhile, Similar Web, which does IP-based analysis, released very different results, saying that India is the only Asian country in the top 10 for Facebook traffic.

According to The Economist online newspaper, one reason for the difference in results is that devices are widely shared in many developing countries.

Conversely, more than three-quarters of the respondents in the GWI report said that they used more than one device. Another factor is the spread of virtual private networks and proxy servers, which makes it possible for people to surf the web through a foreign server.
