The match was held in the northern province of Bac Ninh on June 12.

Vietnamese head coach Pham Minh Dung used his best players for the match against arch rivals Japan, who had defeated China and Thailand 3-0 in their two previous matches.

Japan played with high speed in the first few minutes of the game. Their diversified attack helped them take a lead of 25-12 in the first set.

In the next set, coach Dung changed his tactics and players, which helped Vietnam score many points, boosted by the brilliant performance of Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen. However, the visitors fought back strongly and won 25-12 again.

Vietnam performed their best in the last set in both attack and defence. The two sides tied 10-10. However, with better skills and physical strength, Japan beat the hosts 25-21.

Earlier, Vietnam had lost 1-3 each to Thailand and China.

Vietnam have been eliminated from the event’s quarter-finals.

At the previous championship in 2016 in Thailand, China finished first, followed by Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
