Party chief thanks UN for support to Vietnam
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has thanked the United Nations (UN) and its Secretary General for their valuable support to Vietnam over the past time, especially in dealing with the war consequences.
Meeting Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the UN headquarters in New York on July 10 (local time), the Party chief said he is delighted to meet the host at a significant time that coincides with the 70th anniversary of the UN establishment and development.
The UN General Secretary highly valued the Vietnam-UN partnership and Vietnam’s effective contributions to fulfilling the UN millennial development goals.
Ban Ki-moon praised Vietnam for its vanguard role in fulfilling the UN development goals and joining peacekeeping activities, reflecting its responsibility for common concerns of the world.
He wished that Vietnam would continue its positive part in performing the UN priority tasks this year, including initiatives and other programmes in the coming time.
For his part, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said Vietnam is a responsible member of the international community, continually joining efforts with the UN for a world of peace and sustainable development, adding that Vietnam appreciates the UN peacekeeping mission and will continue engaging in the endeavor in the coming time.
Turning attention to regional and global issues, including the East Sea issue, Ban Ki-moon hoped that parties concerned will settle disputes peacefully in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The UN chief also pledged to urge relevant parties to talk about this issue.
The party leader, in return, called upon the UN and the Secretary General to contribute to peace, stability, maritime and aviation security and safety.
He affirmed Vietnam’s firm stance on settling disputes by peaceful means in line with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS.
On the same day, the Party leader and Vietnamese high-ranking delegation visited a photo exhibition titled “Vietnam-United Nations: Partnership for a sustainable future” at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
The event, held by the Vietnamese delegation at the UN in collaboration with UN organisations in Vietnam, aims to celebrate cooperation between Vietnam and the UN over the past 40 years, from the early days of humanitarian aid, reconstruction and reform to millennium development goals and the current sustainable development goals.
US left-wingers welcome Vietnam Party chief
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong met with US left-wingers in New York on July 9 (local time), who welcomed his “historical” official visit to the US.Merle Ratner, on behalf of the US left-wingers at the event, said the meeting with the Vietnamese high-level delegation headed by the Party chief is a good opportunity for the two sides to tighten solidarity and mutual understanding.
The achievements the Vietnamese Party and people have gained over the past time are a vivid demonstration for the success of the Communist party with sound guideline and firm political spirit.
She confirmed the US left-wingers’ support to Vietnam.
For his part, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong thanked the US friends for their assistance to Vietnam in the cause of national liberation, construction and defence.
He highly valued the US left-wingers’ practical deeds in supporting the Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO)/Dioxin victims and addressing the post-war consequences.
The development in the Vietnam-US relations is significantly contributed by US friends, he added.
He highlighted the situation in Vietnam after 30 years of “doi moi” (reform) and its path to socialism.
He asserted that the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and Vietnamese people have always been pursuing the goal of national independence and socialism.
Party chief talks with overseas Vietnamese in US
Developing relations with major and important partners is a priority in implementing Vietnam’s foreign policy, stated Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong while meeting with representatives of the Vietnamese community in the US in New York on July 9 (local time).
Discussing the outcomes of his official US visit with them, he shared that the two sides discussed specific measures to further all-around bilateral cooperation and adopted a joint vision statement.
Both sides candidly exchanged views on several issues including religion and human rights, he added.
The Party leader hailed the significant contributions by the overseas Vietnamese community to their homeland’s socio-economic development, renewal process and the improvement of its position and role in the international arena.
He also spoke highly of their integration into and positive contributions to the host country and urged them to continue promoting Vietnam’s tradition of unity and intensifying the popularisation of Vietnam to international friends.
Representatives of the overseas Vietnamese community said they were delighted at their nation’s socio-economic achievements and external relations.
They expressed concerns over the East Sea issue as well as the country’s territorial sovereignty while hoping to contribute more to nation-building and development and serve as a bridge to connect Vietnam with other countries and partners.
Party chief meets Chairman of Communist Party USA
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong met Chairman of the Communist Party USA John Bachtell and left-wingers in Washington D.C. on July 9 (local time).
Bachtell congratulated the Communist Party and people of Vietnam on their socio-economic achievements over the past 30 years, and expressed his proud of the traditional solidarity between the two Communist parties, saying that the Communist Party USA will do its best to facilitate the Vietnam – US ties.
The host also briefed his guest on the recent US developments and the Communist Party USA’s current and future activities.
The Party chief congratulated the success of the 30th Congress of the Communist Party USA, and believed that the Party will continually strive to fulfill its responsibility as a political mainstay of the US working people.
He thanked the US communists for their support to Vietnam’s past liberation as well as the current national construction and development.
Though geographically distant, the Communist Party and people of Vietnam closely follow the developments of their US fellows, he said while expressing his delight at the close ties between the two parties.
The Party leader invited Bachtell to visit Vietnam later this year. He sincerely thanked and accepted it with pleasure.
Party Leader meets with former US President Clinton
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on July 10 met with former US President Bill Clinton at his home in Kittle House, New York.
President Clinton expressed his pleasure with the fine development of relations between Washington and Hanoi since diplomatic relations were normalized two decades ago following the end of the Vietnam War.
The two nations’ relationship over the past twenty years has witnessed increasingly positive development President Clinton said, consistent with the best interests of the two peoples.
This commitment to strengthened ties by leaders of the two countries has contributed greatly to peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity in the Asia–Pacific region, President Clinton underscored.
At the meeting, Trong thanked President Clinton for his significant contributions to the normalization of relationships, mentioning specifically the lifting of the US embargo by the Former President in 1994.
He also spoke highly of the contributions the Clinton Foundation has made in supporting Vietnam’s programs on poverty reduction, HIV/AIDS, hunger elimination, solving post-war problems, healthcare development and environmental protection.
On the same day, Trong met the Vietnam mission to the United Nations.
Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of the Vietnam Mission to the UN, briefed General Secretary Trong on the agency activities and congratulated him on the successful results of his visit to the US.
