From December 8 to 10, the congress for the re-establishment of the Association of Afro-Asiatic Writers took place in Cairo, Egypt.

The congress discussed the mission of literature to honor cultural and spiritual values of the peoples of Asia and Africa, while promoting mutual-understanding and solidarity between the peoples of the two continents.

The congress elected the association’s leaders. Vietnamese poet Nguyen Quang Thieu, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Writers' Association, was elected as Deputy Secretary General, in charge of Asia. The new Chairman of the association is an Indian writer and the Secretary General of the association is an Egyptian writer.

The headquarters of the association is located in Cairo, Egypt.

Poet Nguyen Quang Thieu was born in 1957 in Ung Hoa District, Hanoi. He is known for a lot of modern poetry collections that have been translated into many languages such as: The insomnia of fire, The woman carries water river, The song of night birds and others. He is also a painter.

Thieu was elected as Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Writers' Association in August 2010.
