The school also stands out for earning over VND500 billion per year from scientific research and technology transfer, unlike many universities that rely primarily on tuition.

There are currently 12 universities in Vietnam with annual revenue over VND1,000 billion, including eight public and four private institutions.

The 8 public universities include: Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), National Economics University (NEU), University of Economics HCMC, Ton Duc Thang University, HCMC University of Industry, HCMC University of Technology, HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and HCMC University of Technology and Education.

The 4 private universities include: FPT University, HCMC University of Technology, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Van Lang University.

Specifically, the University of Economics HCMC reported total revenue of VND1,887 billion in 2024. Of the VND1,343 billion from education and training, tuition accounted for VND1,281 billion, with the remainder from state and external contracts and sponsorships. Other income was VND61 billion VND.

Notably, income from scientific research and technology transfer at the University of Economics HCMC was 520.8 billion VND, comprising 27 percent of total revenue. This is the highest among universities with billion-VND revenue levels.   

HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy’s total revenue in 2024 was VND1,123 billion. Education and training revenue was 846 billion VND, including 821 billion VND from tuition, with the rest from state and external contracts and sponsorships, plus other sources. Income from scientific research and technology transfer was 105 billion VND. Other income was 172 billion VND.

The HCMC University of Technology’s university's in 2024 was VND1,184 billion VND. Education and training revenue was VND1,054 billion, with tuition at VND873 billion and the balance from contracts, sponsorships, and other sources. Income from scientific research and technology transfer was VND126.5 billion. Other income was VND418 million.

Ton Duc Thang University’s total revenue in 2024 was 1,224 billion VND. Of the 1,129 billion VND from education and training, tuition was 1,072 billion VND, with the remainder from state and external contracts and sponsorships. Income from scientific research and technology transfer was VND44.8 billion. Other income reached VND49.7 billion.

HUST’s total revenue in 2024 reached VND1,502 billion VND, an increase of nearly 80 billion VND from the previous year. Of the VND1,343 billion from education and training, tuition was VND1,277 billion, with the rest from contracts, sponsorships, and budget allocations. Revenue from scientific research and technology transfer was VND101 billion, a slight decrease of VND1 billion from 2023. Other income was VND58 billion.

HCMC University of Technical Education’s total revenue in 2024 was VND1,120 billion. Tuition accounted for VND 976 billion, with budget and external sponsorships at only VND13 billion. Revenue from scientific research and technology transfer was 46 billion VND. Other sources contributed VND67 billion.
