VN to face Thailand in VTV Cup semi-final

Viet Nam will meet Thailand's U23 squad in the semi-final of the International Women's Volleyball Tournament – VTV Cup in the southern province of Bac Lieu on July 31.

In the other semi-final match, China's Liaoning will meet North Korea.

Viet Nam beat North Korea 3-1 in their fifth match on July 29 to top the qualifying round with five wins in a row.

In that match, two key attackers of Viet Nam Ha Ngoc Diem and Do Thi Minh couldn't compete because of injury. Coach Thai Thanh Tung used a new line-up in the match, but they still played very well to beat their rivals 25-21, 28-26, 18-25, 25-19.

Captain Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa scored the maximum points of 19 for the Viet Nam team.

Six teams, including five foreign teams, are participating in the tournament. They competed in a round-robin format to choose the top four semi-final teams.

The winner of the tournament will walk away with US$10,000, while the runners-up will receive $7,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Hoang Nam to attend Men's Futures in Egypt

Vietnam's top tennis star, Ly Hoang Nam is to attend the Men’s F26-28 Futures in Egypt on August 10.

Hoang Nam (who currently ranks No. 1,312 in the world rankings) will compete in the qualifying round to earn the right to enter main rounds.

He has so far attended 3 Futures tournaments in Thailand, Indonesia, and Belgium and advanced to the quarter-finals at the Indonesia and Thailand Futures tennis tournaments.

Nam is also destined for New York to compete at the US Open, Junior Tennis Championship slated for September 6-13.

HCM City hosts Int’l Athletics Tournament 2015

The 22nd Open Ho Chi Minh City International Athletics Tournament began on July 30 at Thong Nhat Stadium.

The five-day event, co-organized by HCM City Department of Culture and Sports and the HCM City Athletics Federation attracted more than 130 athletes from 33 domestic and 5 foreign teams.

Foreign athletes from the Republic of Korea (RoK), Indonesia, Hong Kong (China), Singapore and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) compete in the tournament.

Contestants compete to win 43 different sets of medals.

With 8 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals, Vietnam finished in first place at the 21st Tournament in 2014, followed by the RoK and Thailand.

Viet Nam beat Brunei at U16 football tournament

Viet Nam's U16 football team defeated U16 Brunei 6-1 in their second Group A match at the Southeast Asian U16 Football Championship in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Wednesday.

In other Group A matches, Laos stunned Timor-Leste with a 3-2 victory and Thailand defeated Malaysia 3-1.

Viet Nam, who lost 1-0 to Malaysia in the first match, will next meet Laos today and Thailand on August 3.

Viet Nam won the event twice in 2006 and 2010.

Motorcyclists set to rev their engines in Da Nang race

Top motorbike drivers will race in the seventh round of the National Motorbike Race for 125-150cc engines at the central city's Military Zone 5 Stadium this weekend.

The Viet Nam Cycling Federation said yesterday that participant bikers will compete in two events on Saturday starting at 2pm – Suzuki Sport 125cc for young racers, and Suzuki Raider 150cc for professional racers.

Professional racers will also compete in the Honda Wave, Blade 110cc and MSX 125cc events on Sunday.

Leading up to the weekend, competitors will be testing the track to prep for the tough race this weekend. The qualifier will be an eight lap race.
