VietNamNet Bridge – Nguyen Thanh Phuc won the gold medal in the women's 20km walk at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games being held in Jakarta and Palembang yesterday, Nov 13.

She finished with time of 1hr 44min 22sec to secure the Vietnamese team's first gold in the games.

Her brother Nguyen Thanh Ngung bagged the silver medal on the men's side with a time of 1hr 35min 48sec.

On Saturday, sprinter Vu Thi Huong came in third in the women's 100m with a time of 11.73sec.

Taekwondo artists Nguyen Dinh Toan and Nguyen Minh Tu outclassed tough rivals in front of crowds at Popki Sport Hall in Jakarta, wining the mixed doubles gold medal for yesterday's performance event.

The duo beat Vidal Marvin Gabri and Shance Ched Sia from the Philippines in the final.

Toan then won a silver medal in the men's singles event.

At Tennis Indoor Jakarta, karate artist Le Bich Phuong clinched a gold medal after beating Indonesian Pustitasari 4-0 in the final of the women's 55kg weight category.

In the men's 50m prone rifle yesterday, shooter Vu Thanh Hung scored 696.7 points to edge out Malaysian Sahak Mohamad and win gold in the final shots of the competition.

"I'm so happy to claim the first gold for our shooting team at the SEA Games. It's also my first individual SEA Games gold," the 34-year-old marksman said.

His teammate Ha Minh Thanh, who placed second in the Asian Games in Guangzhou last year, took home the gold in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol.

Earlier, Le Thi Hoang Ngoc earned a silver medal in the women's 10m air rifle, while Bui Quang Nam won a bronze in the men's 25m pistol.

Canoeist Nguyen Thanh Quang triumphed for a gold medal in the men's singles 200m kayak at Cipule Lake yesterday.

Quang has dominated the event this year, as he also bagged the gold in the Southeast Asian Canoeing Championship.

Quang completed the course in 36.62sec to stand on the victory podium on the last day of SEA canoe events.

His teammates Tran Van Long and Nguyen Thi Duyen finished third in their respective events, the men's singles 200m canoe and women's singles 200m kayak.

Viet Nam's top fencer Nguyen Thi Le Dung marked her return at the SEA Games with a gold medal in the women's individual sabre event yesterday.

On Saturday, gymnast Truong Minh Sang of HCM City bid a perfect farewell to the SEA sport course when he and teammates triumphed in the men's team contest.

This gold marked the first team title for the 29-year-old athlete, who had also participated in the five prior SEA Games. "I'm so happy to say good-bye to the national team now. I'm 29 years old and it's time to leave the arena. Next year I officially begin a new stage of my career as a coach of the HCM City gymnastics team," Sang said after his win on Saturday. Sang, who lost his parents when he was one year old, has been a member of the national team since 1996.

Vietnamese athletes won a clutch of gold medals in the karate, taekwondo and canoe events on Saturday.

Meanwhile, midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet scored a hat trick to help Viet Nam's U-23 football team thrash Brunei 8-0 in their Group B match.

The win took Viet Nam to the top of the group with 10 points after three wins and a draw.

The team are set to meet Laos in their last game on Thursday.

Vietnamese athletes have bagged a total of 17 gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze medals so far at the SEA Games.
