The list of newly elected members of the 12th Party Central Committee was announced on January 26 afternoon at a plenary session of the 12th National Party Congress, with 180 official and 20 alternate members.

The two youngest official members are Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nghi, Party Secretary of Kien Giang Province, and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Party Secretary of Danang, both 40 years old. The eldest member is Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, 72, Party Chief of the 11th term.
Of the 200 members, there are 19 people who are under 45 years old, four Deputy Prime Ministers, 22 Deputy Ministers, five people from the Ministry of Public Security and 20 from the army.
Of the 100 reelected members, there are seven Politburo members, including: General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy Chairs of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang, head of the Central Propaganda and Education Committee Dinh The Huynh, and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Nguyen Thien Nhan.
Mr. Le Quoc Phong, 37, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, is the youngest alternate member and also the youngest member of the Party Central Committee of the new term.
The two youngest official members - Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nghi and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh – both hold a doctoral degree and were trained abroad. They are also the youngest provincial Party Secretaries in Vietnam.
There is no representatives of the Ministry of Health in the list, although Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien and Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Long were nominated.
Compared with the previous term, the total number of members did not change, but the number of official members increased by five, to 180 and the number of alternative members fell by five, to 20 people.
The vote was conducted at 10am today.
The nine members of the 11th Politburo who withdrew from the list of candidates for the new term include: President Truong Tan Sang; National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung; Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung; Permanent Secretary of the Party Secretariat Le Hong Anh; Mr. Le Thanh Hai, who is in charge of HCM City Party Committee; Mr. Pham Quang Nghi, who is in charge of the Hanoi Party Committee; and the Head of the Central Organization Committee To Huy Rua.
Tomorrow, January 27, the new Party Central Committee will hold the first meeting to elect the Politburo, the Party Secretary General, the Secretariat, the Central Inspection Committee and the Chairman of the Central Inspection Committee.
The Executive Board of the new term will report the results of election before the newly-elected General Secretary reads the closing speech of the 12th National Party Congress on the morning of January 28.

12th National Party Congress attracts foreign media interest Nearly 150 reporters from more than 20 overseas press agencies have registered to carry news on the 12th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which is underway in Hanoi. Deputy head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education Nguyen The Ky, who is also Director of the Press Centre of the 12 th National Party Congress, said major foreign press agencies such as AP, AFP, Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Xinhua News Agency, China People’s Daily, China Central Television and Al Jazeera TV channel of Qatar have sent their reporters to the event. Tan Qiuyi, a reporter from Singapore’s Channel NewsAsia, said she arrived here with another colleague and a cameraman. The reporter said this is the first time she has carried news on Vietnam’s National Party Congress, adding that she has used her limited Vietnamese to interview delegates so as to have the latest and most accurate information about the event. Dominique, a French reporter, said the Congress offers an opportunity for her and other foreign journalists to learn about the writing style of the Vietnamese press circle. Luke Vargas, a reporter from the US based Talk Media News, praised the well-equipped Press Centre and said he plans to question a number of delegates about Vietnam’s foreign policies stated in the Congress’s Resolution and other documents, which are of Talk Media News readers’ concern. He voiced his hope that he will soon return to Vietnam to cover other events in the country. According to Ky, the foreign reporters’ participation testifies to the international interest in Vietnam, especially the 12th National Party Congress.
