”Story of 16 Coffee Tables” by Nguyen The Son
Fri 15 Jan 2016, 6 pm
Art Vietnam Gallery
24 Ly Quoc Su (2nd Floor), Hanoi
Nguyen The Son, Chinese scholar, photographer, artist on the move, once again provokes us to thought with his latest body of work, “Story of 16 coffee tables”, photo-installation, recently presented in the Mien Meo Mieng (Land of Distortion) exhibition at Umea Bildmuseet University, Sweden curated by Tran Luong.
For this series Son created 16 coffee tables made of lacquer. These 16 coffee tables represent the “16 golden words” – the pillars of the diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and China.
This version of the “16 golden words” is different from the 16 words which Son previously learned in school. The original versions are friendly neighbor, comprehensive cooperation, long term stability, and future-oriented. However, as time has gone by, these slogans have evolved into another version by which the tone has changed considerably. They are joint rivers and mountains, shared ideology, cultural similarity, and correlated fate. It is this version that Son used to make the 16 gold-molded Sino Vietnamese words, written in Chinese calligraphic style. Each “golden word” is carved on a lacquered table top, placed on top of a montage of photographs that portray stories of the various aspects of the meaning of each word in the two different countries, bound by the same ideological mentality.
The use of coffee tables where everyday life and stories are shared serves as a metaphor of this historic connecting of ideas.
It is this investigation of the line between evolution and loss, progress and amnesia that dominates in the work of this probing mind of the scholar/artist.
Also on display are Son’s newest works in the continuation of his Nha Mat Pho and Nha Tay Transforms series. As with the coffee table series, these works do not provide us with answers. Instead they do so much more, inviting viewers to see today’s Hanoi not as discontinuous with the past but as both creating and being created by its quest for the future.

Charlie is left only his father’s car and his collection of rose bushes. In addition to the two leads, Valeria Golino stars as Charlie’s girlfriend, Susanna.
RAIN MAN received overwhelmingly positive reviews, praising Hoffman’s role and the wit and sophistication of the screenplay, and was the highest-grossing film of 1988. The film won four Oscars at the 61st Academy Awards (March 1989), including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Hoffman. Documentary Screening “Hunting in Wartime”
Thu 14 Jan 2016, 7.30 pm
Hanoi Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội
At the end of the alley leading to Artist’s Hotel
Come to the film screening “Hunting in Wartime”, a documentary film by Samantha Farinella.
“Hunting in Wartime” profiles the extraordinary stories of Tlingit Vietnam (American) War veterans from the village of Hoonah, Alaska USA. The veterans talk about surviving trauma, relating to Vietnamese civilians, readjusting to civilian life, and serving a government that systematically oppresses its native people. “Hunting In Wartime” has the long-range perspective of how a soldier’s life was affected long after the war ended, giving us a glimpse into what present-day soldiers may confront now and in the future. Their stories give an important human face to the combat soldier and show the lasting effects of war on individuals, families and communities. The film portrays a stark reality of the human cost of war.
There are many films out today that profile veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This film traces the tension of the soldiers’ tremendous pride in service, the racism that affects their livelihoods and the challenges they faced (and continue to face) in the military and back at home.
With a population of 680, Hoonah, Alaska sent 28 of its sons into the US Armed Forces. 17 saw combat. 16 returned alive. The same skills that enabled these men to survive the harsh nine-month Alaskan winters made the Tlingit soldiers experts on the battlefield, hence the extraordinary survival rate.
During their time in Vietnam, many of these soldiers felt a kinship to the Vietnamese who also originated from small fishing communities. Several of the Vietnamese they encountered would call the Tlingit soldiers “same/same” because of their resemblance to those who they were supposed to be fighting.
Join us for a question and answer session afterwards with director Samantha Farinella.

Exhibition “All about love” by Baptiste Gilloz
Exhibition: 12 – 14 Jan 2016
Floor 17, Hanoi Creative City
No. 1 Luong Yen, Hanoi
Come to “All about love” – a solo show by Baptiste Gilloz for TET ART 2016 Pre-opening.
The first installation ever realized in his latest project META, “All about love” (Group 1 – Scene 1/G1S1) is an introduction of what is at play for the artist focuses, surprises, emotions, intellectual encounters, relationships between things, the effect of affection in general. It is composed of a few pieces he has been working on which are particularly active with each other, especially inspired by the idea of first loves/bonds.
In Baptiste’s scenarios, it is up to us to remain focused on how they can arouse an idea, a memory, a feeling. It is up to us to reveal the lasting impact it has for ourselves, and to decide how we want to steer the whole thing. Being part of his profusion of thought became objects, he suggests us gently to dig further, to refresh our vision, and to play again our beliefs as he plays his.
Therefore, “All about love” is assuredly a gesture; an invitation to leave room for some more poetry in our lives.
* Baptiste Gilloz is a visual artist using mixed media to construct his works. Graduated from École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts Paris – Cergy, he has had exhibitions in both France and Vietnam. META is his latest project, exploring the observation and experience of phenomena generated by the meeting of two or several elements. Controlled, yet autonomous and malleable, META is unfurled by what composes it, where it is received, and who sees it, forming an interactive whole, a producer of infinities.
TET ART 2016 will present the first three installations in this project, each of which shall invite us to allow ourselves to experience a uniqueness, or a breach; the conditions of a personal discovery.

Halls – Hanoi Creative City
“Quỳnh by night” is the first solo exhibition by the artist Quynh Dong in Vietnam and also the kickoff event for a series of activities organized by Nhà Sàn Collective in the year 2016. In this exhibition, Quynh Dong designs a spectacle with layers upon layers of images, which have the ability to challenge the representation of cultural stereotypes and at the same time creates new perceptions in the most unexpected manner.
Interested in and inspired by the pop culture, Quynh Dong employs the material available in the tropes of the soap operas popular in Asia, the music prevalent in music shows or karaoke establishments, mock decorative miniatures, traditional paintings, common new year calendars, and children toys. Each and everyone of them is duplicated, and layered to construct a hyperspace overblown with cultural motifs that are questionable yet assembled in a harmonic, melancholic, sweet, and naïve way. The audience is hence completely bewildered, constantly shaken as though stranded in between amusement and anxiety. In such artificial and plastic world, the female characters, sometimes embodied by the artist herself, always appear in such typical portrayal that prompts skepticism. Which possibilities coming out of the display of consumerism, of propaganda, of collective memories?
Curator: Truong Que Chi
About the artist:
Quynh Dong was born in Hai Phong, Vietnam in 1982. She studied at Design School in Biel/Bienne, at Bern University of Arts, Zurich University of the Arts and Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. She recently completed her residency at MMCA Changdong run by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea in Seoul.

【Probing for corporeality we can really feel in the current age of diluted reality】
The development of television, the Internet, mobile phones, and various other technologies have made it possible to bring occurrences in the distant past and times from the past and future before our eyes, as if they were really there. We nevertheless cannot imagine the tragedies which happened long ago and share the bodies we see affected by them. Designed especially for this present age of diluted reality, this work taps the fundamental power inherent in stage arts, which definitely cannot be experienced without actually being there. It is aimed at imparting a genuine grasp of reality by presenting corporeality that can actually be felt by us who live here and now, for a limited, uncertain future.
About Nibroll
Since its formation in 1999, the Tokyo-based Nibroll has staged many performances inside and outside of Japan, and participated in numerous international festivals. As evidenced by the many awards it has received, it has been widely acclaimed in Japan and other countries for its dynamic productions, which combine dry but violent choreography with video, music, and art, and flood audiences with their sheer volume of information.
Meanwhile, the Mikuni Yanaihara Project, a theatrical project featuring Ms. Mikuni Yanaihara, Nibroll’s leader and choreographer, won even higher levels of recognition and note in the theatrical world when it was selected for the prestigious Kunio Kishida Drama Award in 2012. Yanaihara took the project on a nationwide tour in the summer of 2013, and it met with great success and fervent applause everywhere it laid, in spite of the one-of-a-kind, cutting-edge character of the means applied by its dramaturgy. Even in the global context, Yanaihara must be termed a rare artist who is highly regarded in both dance and theater. She is broadening the range of her energetic activity to the sphere of art, and avidly taking part in exhibitions and projects in Japan and other countries, mainly in Asia.

Listen Differently: Multimedia Conversation Concert with Cao Thanh Lan (Piano)
Sat 09 Jan 2016, 8 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi
As part of the concert series “Listen differently”, which offers the audience surprising and exceptional hearing experiences, the Goethe-Institut presents a multimedia conversation concert with pianist Cao Thanh Lan.
For many years, Cao Thanh Lan has been interested in the esthetics of piano sounds and the question of what contemporary music should sound like. She experiments with tones and timbres, and confronts acoustic piano with electronic sounds. In Hanoi, she will play works of Tom Rojo Poller, who processed texts from Alexander Kluge, pieces by Peter Ablinger with voices of historical figures, as well as compositions by Olivier Messiaen, who was inspired by the singing of birds. The piano pieces will be complemented by audio recordings and video projections.
Many people perceive contemporary music as difficult and disharmonious. But does music need to be “harmonious”? What are the criteria for assessing new music, and can we even assess music at all? In direct conversation with the audience between the individual pieces, the musician will discuss her artistic approach. This way, she stimulates a critical and conscious perception of the music and the multimedia interplay.
Program
Tom Rojo Poller (DE) – (1978 – *) – Zeit ist nicht gutmütig (2011) for piano, transducer, audio and video projection

Since 2007, she has won several awards in national and international competitions, and performed together with other musical ensembles at numerous festivals. Cao Thanh Lan moves between contemporary, classical and experimental music, always questioning the definition of music itself.

Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise” Recital
Fri 08 Jan 2016, 7.30 pm
The small concert hall
Vietnam National Academy of Music
“Winterreise” is a song cycle composed by Franz Schubert on poems by Wihelm Müller before Shubert’s death at 31. “Winterreise” portrayed a travel of a young man after the betrayal of his lover. However, beyond the story of infidelity, his travel continues upon the constant psychological movements: regret, loneliness, despair then hope, determination and the coming-back of the soul. 24 songs are 24 perspectives and stages of human emotion that whoever has overcome challenges in life would be able to relate to. As mentioned above, Schubert composed this song cycle before his premature death in 1828. Therefore, “Winterreise” contains many thoughts and wisdom of a young ambitious man but over haunted by a dark color of death and desolation. Indeed, because of this unique characteristic, “Winterreise” is always one of the most celebrated compositions in the world of German classical vocal music.
This song cycle will be performed by Tenor Hieu Nguyen, and pianist Tran Ha Mi at 19:30 on January 8th, 2016.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
Hieu Nguyen is a passionate, dedicated and talented Vietnamese Tenor. His talent was first discovered by a choir conductor and music professors at Bates College, Maine, U.S.A., where he was a student of political psychology and concentration in sound with full scholarship from 2009 to 2014. Hieu won the 2nd prize in the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) competition in 2014 against all professional singers in the region. During his college career, he performed many solo parts for the college choirs including Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, and Beethoven’s symphony No.,9, as well as recitals: Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Schubert’s art songs. He also performed a recital in Germany in 2015. Currently, Hieu is a voice student of Richard Staab in Darmstadt and Joachim Keuper in Mainz, Germany.
Pianist Trần Hà Mi started playing piano when she was 5 years old. The passionate young pianist honed her skill at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. She received full scholarship to attend the prestigious Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Russia with professor Olga Mikhailovna Zhukova. She graduated in 2009. Since then Mi worked at the Vietnam National Academy of Music as a piano teacher and accompanist. Video for the track 僕らはシークレット by Sota Masuda:
“Do you have a talent for suicide?”
Director’s Statement [excerpt]:
“27-year-old Sota is the main character of this documentary. ‘There’s nothing more for me to learn in school,’ he says about his choice to drop out from high school. He came to Tokyo and grabbed his chance to debut with his music on a major label.
The filming begins just when his clinical manic-depression takes a bad turn, his debut is cancelled, and he is returning home to his parents’ house. We see him hanging out in his hometown with his friends – Kurando, who adores Sota and claims to want to be a musician, but never practices; Sota’s ex-girlfriend Yukino, who, unlike the other ‘freeters’, works diligently in a stable job as a cook and continues music on the side, and others.
Although Sota was a lowly ‘freeter’ returning home after his dreams were shattered, I felt there were many shining moments of laughter and happiness in those days in his hometown. But one day Sota suddenly kills himself and dies at the age of 27. His dream to make a comeback with his music never comes true.
“The facts are simple, but in fact I was overcome by a sense of guilt about Sota’s death. Would he still be alive had I not filmed him? My days became mired deep in depression. Could it be that Sota’s performative personality made him choose death in a final desperate longing, to maintain his special existence on camera?
‘You have to finish the film, promote my music and paintings after my death, like Yamada Kamachi’ (a “genius” artist who died young) – he wrote in the letter he left before his suicide.”
– Shingo Ota
