“VIBRANT HIGHLAND, COMMERCIAL LOVE”

It’s a story of wild & exotic love. It’s a story of tribal kings and opium trade. It’s a story of kidnapping and loss. It’s a story of sexual discovery, of spirits and magic. It’s a story of government propaganda vs. the fascinating yet harrowing reality of the people.

Far up in Vietnam’s remote mountains, once a year, a secretive Love Market is held. Delving beyond the ambiguous myths, this unique, independently produced adventure documentary discovers a reality much more fascinating, even more painful, than the legends told.

Exhibition “Speaking in the Dark”

Artist talk: Sat 09 Jul 2016, 4 pm

Exhibition: 10 – 24 July 2016, 2 – 7 pm (from Wednesday to Sunday)

Nha San Collective

15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

Nha San Collective is happy to invite you to the exhibition “Speaking in the dark” by two artists Hồng-Ân Trương and Hương Ngô.

This exhibition brings together new bodies of work by two artists, Hồng-Ân Trương and Hương Ngô. Drawing from their experiences as part of the Vietnamese diaspora, both artists use their family histories to explore questions of belonging, language, and memory. Through video, photography, and installation, Hồng-Ân Trương and Hương Ngô consider the ways in which identity is affected by shifting notions of time.

Hồng-Ân Trương’s work asks, “What is the act of remembering when the language that is spoken is always already fragmented?” Her installation uses the photographic and the cinematic to reveal the incapacities of language in the aftermath of trauma.

Through the investigation of voice as both medium and archive, Hương Ngô complicates the borders between personal and collective experience, fact and fiction in the process of understanding ourselves. Exploring the interaction of image and sound through personal and popular culture references, Hương Ngô asks “How do we reconcile the tension between seeking a fixed identity with the reality of how culture moves and is transferred?”

About artist Hồng-Ân Trương

Hồng-Ân Trương’s interdisciplinary projects examine structures of time, memory, and the production of knowledge by engaging with archival materials, individual and collective narratives, and histories that span cultural and national borders. Her work has been shown at the International Center for Photography, Art in General, Smack Mellon, and The Kitchen among others. In 2013 she was recipient of an Art Matters Grant, a Franconia Sculpture Park Jerome Fellowship, and a Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship. She was an artist-in-residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2015. Truong was a studio art fellow in the Whitney Independent Study Program and is currently an artist in the Open Session Program, curated by Nova Benway and Lisa Sigal at The Drawing Center in New York. She is an Assistant Professor in the Art Department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

About artist Hương Ngô

Exhibition “Sketching Vietnamese History” by Quach Phong

Opening: Sat 09 Jul 2016, 6 pm

Exhibition: 09 Jul – 02 Aug 2016

HCMC Fine Arts Museum

97A Pho Duc Chinh, D1, HCMC

‘Sketching Vietnamese History’ is the first large-scale solo exhibition by senior artist Quach Phong. This exhibition showcases the remarkable ambition of a man who, as an artist, has witnessed major scenes of war; endured the struggle of a nation in its resistance against differing coercions; and assisted the growth of artistic networks in Vietnam since 1975.

A project already 2 years in production, ‘Sketching Vietnamese History’ showcases but a fraction of what Quach Phong dreams this entire endeavor to be. On view you will find two (out of three) paper scrolls, each more than 50-meter long, with gouache sketch of events from the legendary era of Hung Kings 2000BC until the early Le Trung Hung era in the 1500s. A 1-hour long animation will show the entire 3 scrolls. The first 12 lacquer panels that bring these scroll-sketches to life, and an extensive interview with the artist on his artistic vision will highlight the exhibition. Quach Phong’s ongoing labor of love is envisaged to eventually depict the history of Vietnam to the present day, determined to produce these images as a major public art piece – as a monument to Vietnam.

‘Sketching Vietnamese History’ is curated by Dinh Q. Le, Zoe Butt, and Nguyen Bich Tra.

The production of paper made from bamboo has a long tradition in some Asian countries, but the process is usually completed with the moulding of the paper. But this is just the beginning for Truc Chi – a new form of art: the artists of the group interact with the wet structure of the paper in the frame and use water pressure and other techniques to change the surface. In this way, unique images are created, which some artists further process through brush or collage techniques.

The person behind the new discovery of bamboo paper for Contemporary Art is artist Phan Hai Bang, who developed new techniques for the treatment of the material. In 2012, Phan Hai Bang, together with students of the Hue College of Arts formed the association Viet Nam Truc Chi Art (“Nghệ Thuật Trúc Chỉ Việt Nam”). The exhibition “Truc Chi – Listen To The River” presents bamboo paper artworks for the first time in the Goethe-Institut Hanoi from July 1-15, 2016.

As part of an artist talk on July 2, Phan Hai Bang and Dr. Nguyen Nghia Phuong of the Vietnam Fine Arts University will explain the new term “Trucchigraphy” (“Đồ Họa Trúc Chỉ”), show some examples and have a discussion with the audience.

Want to learn more and try out the techniques to process the bamboo paper yourself? Apply for our workshop on July 2 and a final workshop on July 14. The minimum age for participation is 14 years. The workshop is held in Vietnamese. Applications should be sent until June 28 to Mrs Tran Thanh Huong, info@hanoi.goethe.org.

Talk with Historian Liam Kelley: “The Alternative Origin Story”

Sun 03 Jul 2016, 2.30 – 6 pm

1st floor, Hanoi Creative City

01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

“The Alternative Origin Story: How a New Story about Vietnamese Origins Emerged in the 20th Century” – a talk with historian Liam Kelley.

Virtually every human society today has a story about where it came from, or what we can call an “origin story”. In the case of Vietnam, one could say that the story about  Thần Nông, Kinh Dương Vương, Lạc Long Quân and the Hùng Kings is a kind of origin story. However, there was a new origin story that emerged in the 20th century that  argued that the ancestors of the Vietnamese were agriculturalists (người nông nghiệp) who migrated into the region to get away from pastoralists (người du mục) to the  north. This talk will examine how and why this “alternative origin story” emerged in the 20th century.

The talk will be held in English with Vietnamese translation.

Liam Kelley is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He teaches about Southeast Asian history, and researches and writes about Vietnamese history. Recently he has been researching about the efforts to discover the origins of the Vietnamese by various people in modern times, from French scholars during the colonial period to various Vietnamese scholars in the post-colonial era.

Knowledge Exchange Seminar – “Skylines with Flying People 3”: A Dialogue between Liam Kelley and Appendix Group

Sun 10 Jul 2016, 4.30 – 7 pm

Nha San Collective

15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

Organized within the scope of “SWFP 3”, Knowledge exchange seminars aim to increase awareness of a contemporary Vietnam and to promote dialogues and collaborations amongst different fields and communities, so as to generate new knowledge as well as diverse and creative initiatives.

Each seminar follows subject matters that are relevant to the 12 sub-projects within “Skylines with Flying People 3”, with discussions conducted by an artist and an expert in another discipline such as history, archeology, sociology, etc. Knowledge exchange seminars will be held from March 2016 to December 2016 at different venues in Hanoi.

The second seminar will be the presentation and discussion between Liam Kelley, historian, associate professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Appendix group, participating artist of “Skylines with Flying People 3”.

The seminar will be held in English and Vietnamese.

Moderator: Bui Kim Dinh

* Appendix Group – “Reunion Journey 1”

Appendix will introduce their performance art project which took place in December 2015. Their project explores a predetermined agenda that involves various confrontations with the complex history through the journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City on the train known as Thống Nhất; with each member of the group carrying different allegorical objects of personal importance to them.

* Historian Liam Kelley – “Visualizing Vietnam: From the Past to the Present”

If you take the Thống Nhất train from Hanoi to Saigon/HCMC (or from Saigon/HCMC to Hanoi), you can literally “see” Vietnam, and this can help you “visualize” (in your mind) the country. Similarly, if you look at a map you can also “visualize” Vietnam. However, trains and the type of maps that we are familiar with today are both “modern.” They were both introduced into Vietnam in the late nineteenth century.

So what did Vietnam “look like” before that time? How did people “see” or “visualize” (in their minds) Vietnam prior to the late nineteenth century? What effects did new ways of visualizing the land bring? This is the topic that this talk will cover. In the process, it will introduce some of the ways that scholars have talked about this issue of “visualizing” a nation.

The Appendix, founded in 2010 by six artists, is an active performance art group with four core members: Vũ Đức Toàn, Nguyễn Huy An, Nguyễn Song, Ngô Thành Bắc. In the usual office attires of black slacks and white shirts, they perform repetitive, programmed actions or movements over the course of several hours, utilising everyday objects as props. Appendix creates slowed down portraits of our rapidly changing, and increasingly difficult to define society. Their complex group performances allow the audience to quiet down and slow down to their pace, and to carefully consider the forces – the violence, values and traditions at work beneath supposed standardization and monotony. Appendix participated in various local and international events including international performance art festivals in Korea, Singapore and “Skylines with Flying People 2” in Hanoi.

He is also the co-founder of Engaging With Vietnam Conference Series since 2010.
