“VIBRAND HIGHLAND, COMMERCIAL LOVE”

It talks about political reeducation, about spirits and magic. All those stories are intertwined in an energetic narrative centering around the myth and conspiracy of the secretive Love Market, a unique event during which ethnic minority couples supposedly break away from their families seeking to reconnect with their old lovers.

The film had its world premiere at The World’s Independent Film Festival in San Francisco, USA, where it is also recognized as BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director Matt Dworzanczyk.

Concert “Legacy”

Fri 24 Jun 2016, 7.30 pm

HCMC Conservatory of Music

112 Nguyen Du Street, Ward 1, HCMC

Following serial concerts to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, we proudly presents a concert performed by Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra in collaboration with guest artists from USA and Singapore: Concert “Legacy”.

The concert has a wonderful program with the remarkable works of two renowned German composers: Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. The orchestra would bring to the audience many emotions from the intense melodies of Beethoven – Symphony No. 5, one of the most famous symphonies in the world, and the gigantic Piano Concerto No. 1 by Brahms which is not performed frequently in Vietnam.

Beethoven composed the Symphony No. 5 in 1808 when he was 37 years old. This Symphony consists of four movements which includes the familiar iconic “knock by fate” theme of the 1st movement. The whole symphony is the journey through 4 stages of feeling: the desperate fear, the tense struggle, the final victory, praising love life.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor is one of the most monumental concertos written for Piano and Orchestra. Brahms had gave the premiere at Hannover, Germany in 1853 after he had composed and edited it for 5 years. Those first gestures are so powerful and impress themselves upon us so forcefully that, if we are not listening with all our attention, we can easily overlook how much of this movement is quiet and reflective.

The concert promises to give the audience the memorable moments through the virtuoso performance combination with sublime feelings of two guest artists from the United States, Ms. Apo Hsu – conductor and from Singapore, pianist Albert Tiu, together with Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra.

Maestre Hsu began her tenure as the Orchestra Director at the National Taiwan Normal University in the fall of 2003. Since the summers of 2000, Ms. Hsu serves as a guest faculty member at The Conductor’s Institute at Bard College in New York. Guest appearances have taken Maestra Hsu all over the US as well as Russia, Asia, South America and Australia.

Born in Cebu, Philippines, Albert Tiu has been described as “an artist of uncommon abilities” by American Record Guide. He is currently an Associate Professor of Piano at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (Singapore). In 1996, he won First Prize in the UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria. He is also a prize-winner in Calgary (Honens), Santander (Paloma O’Shea) and Helsinki (Maj Lind).

An unbelievable adventure: the great war by a colony of ants who overcomes numerous challenging obstacles to take possession of a sugar box to save their own species!

Film synopsis:

Adapted from the well-known TV series, the animation combines the magnificent background of mountains and forests with the authentic 3D characters. This no-dialogue movie is widely praised when released in France in 2013. Le Figaro comments: “The script is humorous and gentle”. Le Mondo appreciates the techniques, confirming the movie is the creative result of amazing sound. “Rain, wind and drops of water of the leaves are sometimes captured authentically and impressively”. In “The valley of ants”, a common sugar box left behind by the picnic goers become the treasure. This treasure ignites the war between the two colonies of ants. Red and black ants enter the great war to kill each other. The epic atmosphere among the ant colonies make this story become great!

In a peaceful little clearing, the remains of a picnic hastily abandoned spark warfare between two tribes of ants. A bold young ladybug finds himself caught in the middle of the battle. He befriends one of the black ants, Mandible, and helps him save the anthill from the assault of the terrible red ant warriors, led by the fearful Butor.

Music Night with Hanging up the Moon / Mademoiselle / The Veranda

Sun 26 Jun 2016, 7 – 10 pm

Hanoi Rock City

27/52 Tô Ngọc Vân, Tây Hồ

The Onion Cellar presents

HANGING UP THE MOON

with MADEMOISELLE

and THE VERANDA

‘Numb and insulated

Gently fall with the rain

Down the river to the sea

‘Til there’s only you and I’

The Onion Cellar is chuffed – VERY – to present an intimate live-show from our friends from dreamy folk/rock/pop quintet HANGING UP THE MOON, a mainstay of the great Singaporean music underground alongside the likes of Aspidistrafly and The Observatory (and their side-projects) who have all played killer shows (at Hanoi Rock City, yes) for us in the past.

Personally speaking, it is safe to say the ‘downcast tunes’ of HANGING UP THE MOON, especially those from their latest album Immaterial, have soundtracked various unforgettable moments – surreal and beautiful, and never meant to be – from the present writer’s recent past lives.

We could only hope, thus, that you may also find solace, and perhaps a tiny glimmer of light, in these nocturnal songs.

RIYL: Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Neil Young, Sparklehorse (the quiet stuff)

HANGING UP THE MOON started off as the solo project of Sean Lam, ex-frontman of Concave Scream, one of Singapore’s pioneer indie bands. Recorded entirely in his study in the wee hours of the morning, the self-titled debut album was a stripped-down affair, its quiet sound captivating both critics and listeners alike.

In the follow-up album, HANGING UP THE MOON explored a different soundscape with the help of good friends and fellow veterans of the local music scene: Dean Aziz (Concave Scream), Leslie Low (The Observatory) and Victor Low (Affixen). “The Biggest Lie In The World” was launched at the Esplanade Recital Studio, playing to a full house. The album has since sold out and is currently pending a reissue.

With “Immaterial”, HANGING UP THE MOON moves even further away from its singer-songwriter roots and continues to evolve both in sound and set-up, with Alexius Cai (Piblokto) joining the line-up. This new album is the band’s most lush and ambitious project to date. Layers upon layers of vocals meet their match in violins and cellos at times epic and soaring, at times subtle and grounded – all set against HANGING UP THE MOON’s signature melodies, riffs and rhythm.

Exhibition: 23 Jun – 23 Aug 2016

The Factory Contemporary Art Centre

15 Nguyen U Di, Thao Dien District 2, Ho Chi Minh City

‘Dislocate’ is a solo exhibition by acclaimed Vietnamese artist, Bùi Công Khánh, it is his largest and most ambitious art installation to date.

Walk into the world of ‘Dislocate’ and the wood of the jackfruit tree springs to life referencing a myriad of social and cultural histories concerning Vietnam in style and subject. A stunningly carved fortress sits center-stage; its beams, decorative panels and windows recalling the magnificent architectural traditions of Hue (the ancient capital of Vietnam). Surrounding this fortress stand four spiritual ‘guards’ – miniature pagoda ensconced within ‘penjing’ representing the cycle of the seasons. Working with a team of senior expert wood carvers and carpenters from Hoi An over a two year period, ‘Dislocate’ embraces a complex interwoven set of narratives that pivots around this ancient city on the central coast of Vietnam – a city at the heart of Bui Cong Khanh’s practice and family history.

Vietnam International Fingerstyle Guitar Festival 2016

Hanoi: Tue 19 Jul 2016, 8 pm

Youth Theater

HCMC: Wed 20 Jul 2016, 8 pm

HCMC Conservatory of Music

International Finger-Style Guitar Festival (IFSGF) comprises a series of international fingerstyle guitar concerts. This is an annual event that has been organized continuously since 2010 in Asia. With the participation of famous fingerstyle guitarists from many countries, IFSGF this year is organized with 16 concerts in 7 countries. The festival will start on June 29 in Japan. It will continue in Korea, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia and finish on July 23 in Singapore.

Artists of IFSGF 2016 to be performing in Vietnam:

ANDY MCKEE (America)

Very few guitarists nowadays are as well known by the mass as fingerstyle guitar master Andy McKee. At the end of 2006, he became a worldwide iconic figure after the performance of his song “Drifting” gained huge favor on Youtube and MySpace with more than 46 million views, and went viral on the Internet. Until now, it is still rated as the most successful music clip of this genre.

HUANG CHIA WEI (Taiwan)

Chia Wei organized the fingerstyle guitar contests and concerts in Taiwai to boost fingerstyle music in his country. He also organized many global concerts to better promote fingerstyle guitar to people. The differences in the environment around Huang Chia-Wei and in his life created the diversity in his music. Sometimes romantic and emotional, his music can calm you. Sometimes inspiring, his music will make you dance.

MASA SUMIDE (Japan)

Hailed by fellow guitarists as a ‘brilliant groove player’, Masa Sumide stretches the limit of the acoustic guitar and lets it sing with his unique one-man band style and melodic compositions. His repertoire runs from jaw-dropping funky tunes to sophisticated yet accessible jazzy, bluesy grooves. His music is full of beats and rhythm. It will make you want to dance all the time.

TÙNG AG (Vietnam)

At the end of 2011, after 10 months of learning fingerstyle guitar by himself, he gained recognition from the community with his tutorial video of “Sunflower” by Paddy Sun. Born in 1989. Tung AG (real name is Tung Do Duong) is the founder and president of Vietnam Fingerstyle Guitar Organization [VNFS] – the first and currently still the only organization known of fingerstyle guitar genre in Vietnam.

ERICA & SANDRA (Korea)

Erica Eunji Cho is a Korean girl born in 1995 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She started playing guitar in fingerstyle in February 2011 and has had many arrangements, covers highly appreciated on YouTube. Erica took one month of guitar lesson and then starting to learn by herself.

Sandra Bae (born in 1994), is a Korean freestyle guitarist and music composer who is currently signed to record label Namuare in South Korea. She was born in South Korea and was living in Pennsylvania, America before returning to her native country in 2013. She wrote on her YouTube channel: “I was just a girl who loved playing music in her room. I started sharing my music with the world and my dreams started to come true. Now I am a full time musician!”

Exhibition “Breath of Life” by Trinh Thang

Opening: Sun 26 Jun 2016, 10 am

Exhibition: 26 Jun – 09 Jul 2016

Exhibition House, 16 Ngo Quyen, Hanoi

The exhibition “Breath of Life” by Trinh Thang will feature 45 among more than 200 painting of him, marking his creative breakthrough over the past year.

Trinh Thang’s artworks are initially quite self-absorbed and innocent. He unintentionally simulates anything but not ignores the flow of life.

Trinh Thang obviously stands between two extremes: one side is the innocence and the other is the responsibility of those who understand life. He seems to have been able to describe this state of living in each painting.

Looking at his paintings, we are free to feel, express and draw conclusions but never should we confine them to any certain extreme. ‘

Let his artworks drift and express itself freely as a breath of life, just like the title of the exhibition.

Film Screening “A Dream in Hanoi”

Thu 23 Jun 2016, 7.30 – 9 pm

Cinematheque

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Come to film screening “A Dream in Hanoi” (2002) by director Tom Weidlinger.

Twenty five years after the end of the Vietnam War, Vietnamese and Americans joined forces in a unique collaboration. Two theatre companies, one American, one Vietnamese, join forces in Hanoi to stage a polyglot version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, complete with ballet dancers and onstage musicians. “A Dream In Hanoi” follows the actors, directors, producers and technicians from both countries as they struggle to surmount the obstacles of language, culture, ideology and a history of war—on their journey to opening night at Hanoi’s famous Opera House.

Creative differences abound, especially between the celebrated Vietnamese director Doan Hoang Giang and producer Lorelle Browning, each of whom is attempting to stay true to diverse visions — one based on Asian heritage, the other holding Shakespeare sacrosanct. At the same time, the stage manager rails against 2-hour lunch breaks while Vietnamese producer Do Doan Chau laments the pathological American obsession with timetables.

Meanwhile, the American lead actor starts a small revolution by introducing his Vietnamese leading lady to a level of on-stage intimacy taboo in rational Vietnamese theatre. American feminism clashes with Vietnamese expectations of female behaviour when leading man Do Ky chastises his co-star for her assertively physical portrayal of “a woman that no Vietnamese man ever could love.”

President Obama’s rapturous reception on his end-of term visit highlighted the current positivity of US-Vietnamese relations, but the mood at the turn of the millennium was very different. President Clinton’s own visit to Vietnam sends a thrill of possibility and risk through the events of the film. While diplomatic relations were officially restored under Clinton, this film documents the early days of rapprochement on a cultural and personal level, and was the first American documentary on Vietnam on a subject other than the war and its legacy.

Film synopsis:

This collection includes a series of 4 allegory films of 26 minutes: Leon in Wintertime, Molly in Springtime, Bonifacio in Summertime, Poppety in the fall. All four films are an absolute charming mix of storytelling and 3D puppet animation. The graphics are of exceptional quality with Leon in Wintertime receiving the Award of Excellence 2008 Alliance for Children and Television. Made separately in 4 different years, each episode can be watched separately and complement each other well. The full-of-laughter adventures of bear Leon and his friends on wide screen not only bring hilarious relaxing moments for audience but also transfer highly pedagogical comments. Even though the series is recommended for younger audiences, viewers of all ages will appreciate the artistic material.

Their documentary film tells the story of a man who has transformed architecture around the world. His work with the Louvre in Paris, and the introduction of the glass pyramid that upset some and fascinated many, is just an example of his insightful bravery to cross cultural divides and bridge worlds that has so much to learn from each other. [imdb]

I. M. Pei was born on 26 Apr 1917 in Suzhou, Jiangsu, into an elite Chinese family. Due to his father’s work, the family had to move around, first to Hong Kong, then to Shanghai. Shanghai’s open policy in the 1920s which created a boom in construction had a great influence on Ieoh Ming Pei.

Participants will create new instruments and perform as part of a large, impromptu orchestra. With this impromptu orchestra and the multitude of different ensembles created by the participants and varied sounds drawn from Hanoi’s streets, a new kind of “music without musicians” will be born in Hanoi.

To produce the second concert, 2 weeks workshop will be held with Otomo Yoshihide – a musician, Suzuki Akio – a sound artist, and facilitators of Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese nationalities. Participants for workshop will search for sounds from the street, from life in Hanoi, and create musical instruments.

“Workshop members” are the individuals who will create the ensembles and orchestra by joining the guest artists, guest advisors and facilitators in searching for sounds and instrumental materials for the “Hanoi Collective Orchestra,” as well as participating in experimental ensembles. We will continue to bring you an incredible live music line up with a dedicated stage bringing you the cream of talent that Vietnam has to offer as well as introducing some international acts from South East Asia and beyond. Expect to be surprised, expect to hear something completely different and expect to dance the night away to the best local and international acts!

WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES

Festivals are about much more than just music, we believe in sharing ideas and skills. Our workshop program is expanding even further this year to provide a whole host of experiential activities for the Questlings. Beloved mainstays such as yoga, crafts and meditation will be on offer alongside some much more unusual classes.

FOOD

What good would such a delicious selection of music, arts and performance be without an equally delicious selection of food? This year, a range of Hanoi’s leading restaurants will be personally on site to keep your tummy satisfied. Details will be updated soon!

ARTWORK, INSTALLATIONS AND STAGES

Each year Quest improves the experience from the previous edition, this year will bring 4 complete stages, each designed and built with the experience for audience and performers in mind. There are huge plans to step things up again this year, expect to be surprised. The site will take on even more intricate beauty as we create visual delights through installations, live art and those little touches which let you know you are at Quest.

COSTUMES

For many the weekend is a chance for personal artistic expression, and this is something we wholly support. Creative attendees will be exalted and rewarded. Our theme will be announced shortly. For the most creative among us is the hallowed Quest Catwalk awaits. The chance to strut the fruits of your labour down the catwalk, and perhaps take home the ultimate prize. A lifetime ticket to Quest.

QUEST CINEMA

For the first time ever, Quest will be featuring its own dedicated cinema space. This space will feature adapted film festival content, artist-curated music video showcases, philosophical exegesis of cat videos, and audio-visual workshops. Working with Vietnam’s leading film orgs and visual artists, and liberally sprinkled with comfy cushions, the space will add a more relaxed dimension to the Quest experience.
