As freelance artist he now commutes regularly between Austria and Vietnam. In addition to Vietnam his paintings were already shown in Austria, Germany, France and Italy.

A Night at the Opera – “Salome” by Richard Strauss
Sun 29 May 2016, 7 pm
Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội
At the end of the alley leading to Artist’s Hotel
Come to the screening of a classic production of “Salome” by Richard Strauss. “Salome” is the most widely known of the composer’s operas. He based his opera on the play by Oscar Wilde but used a German libretto instead of the original French language that Wilde used for the play.
The opera (and play) are based on the Biblical story of Salome, who demands the head of John the Baptist on a charger as payment for pleasing Herod with her Dance of the Seven Veils. The opera was controversial at the time of its premiere, and was banned by the censors in many European countries.
The performance we are screening was originally produced for Austrian television and is now considered one of the finest versions available. Ironically, the opera was banned in Austria from its premiere in 1905 until 1918.
The opera will be screened in the original German with English subtitles.
For those with membership at the Cinémathèque, make a reservation as usual by phoning the Cinémathèque, daily between 14:30 – 21:00 at 3936-2648. A limited number of tickets are also available through the Opera Guild, send an email to info@hanoioperaguild.com. A donation of VND 60,000 is suggested.

Windy Day 14 “Pondering Life, through the Rhythms of Xẩm”
Fri 27 May 2016, 7.30 – 9.30 pm
Đình Hào Nam, Vu Thanh, Hanoi
Xẩm is perceived by many as being melancholic, as it is the melody performed by the blind street-artists – this is a huge misconception. In Xẩm, love is a recurring theme, the love for life has the power to drown out sorrow and heal every broken heart. That is the notion of life, as once stated by Luu Quang Vu, a Vietnamese well-known playwright and poet, “The carpenter was wrong / If life is all evil / How could the apple tree bloom? / How could the runnel be so pure?
We do not know how you think about OUR LIVES
It goes without saying, “The stories told in Xẩm are those of life” – that is true, be it love, family, education and examination, or the stories of one’s destiny, there will always be both joy and sorrow. Sadness mixes with happiness, happiness helps to fade the sadness out… In Xẩm they co-exist in the harmony of melody and rhythm, while at the same time being so simple and modest in presentation.
Therefore, Tôi Xê Dịch, in Windy Day 14, chose a topic which at first glance may seem “ordinary”, but is actually so profound: “Pondering life, through the rhythms of Xẩm” in order to help youths enter the world of the most modest genre of traditional music that is so filled with love, appreciation and joy.
To help participants further immerse in the notions of Xẩm, “Pondering life, through the rhythms of Xẩm” is the first time that you’ll get the opportunity to experience such an art form while blindfolded. This unique interaction is our way of helping the participants not only have a natural and genuine beginning, but also experience the features of Xẩm – the notions of lyrics and stories through the perspective of the blind street-performers.
Windy Day 14: “Pondering life, through the rhythms of Xẩm” is a non-profit event. Participants can financially support Tôi Xê Dịch in the process of organizing the event. The money raised during the event will be entirely used for organization expenses and will be explicitly professed on public media and among contributors.
Music Night with Chandra from Philippines
Wed 25 May 2016, 9 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
Our special night with Chandra – talented singer/songwriter from Manila, Philippines.
Chandra means moon. Some titles are based on western zodiac, the songs are quite dark and dreamy.
The lyrics are mostly about life, death, sensuality and romanticism. The voice mixes with the guitar to dreary a euphony of pain and melancholy.
The songs can be related to so many things because it is also quite metaphoric; depression, suicide, death, death of the soul, being alive, being aware and awake. It would make you feel sad but at the same time, hopeful. But most importantly, it shows how attachment could bring much sadness and suffering to an individual, so it also tries to make you see things and accept things as they are, by simply letting go of things, of people, of events or situations. Because it is what it is. You just have to trust the universe and believe. Depression and anxiety were the major inspiration why these songs were born.

Exhibition: 21 – 26 May 2016
An Nam Parlour Cafe
24 Hang Vai, Hanoi
Artist Rasa Flay has been a world traveler since 2000 when she left her native Lithuania for the United States. The past four years Rasa has called Hanoi her home, where she has been studying lacquer painting in the studios of Le Kim My, Yuki Namba and Nguyen Huy Hoan. A symbiosis of natural and urban environments has always interested the artist, and living in Hanoi certainly provided plenty of inspiration to depict chaotically arranged, static shapes of the cityscape set against fluidity of the natural world, presented by the waters of Hanoi’s lakes, ponds and rivers.
A discovery of the Vietnamese lacquer painting was a highlight of Rasa’s artistic practice. Looking at her paintings, it is obvious that she completely fell in love with the process of creating lacquer work, when layers upon layers of lacquer colored with pigments or highlighted with inlay of eggshell, river, or sea shell magically reveal itself after the final sanding of the piece. A new, sometimes unexpected version of the initial idea appears within the painting, bringing an element of surprise to its creator and the viewer.

The result is a joyous pop with spontaneity voices – those of children in particular – and acoustic instruments. He managed with great skill to take us into a maelstrom of rhythmic titles that never explode but we intoxicate their rehearsals.

Europe Days in Vietnam 2016
The “Europe Days 2016” program is having a rendezvous with Vietnamese public, proposing a fascinating journey through the European cultural scene with a series of diverse intellectual and cultural activities.
Set to provide a bridge for cross-cultural exchange, the “Europe Days 2016” program, held by the Delegation of the European Union (EU), the Embassy of the EU Member States and the European Cultural Institutes, is to mark Europe Day – 9 May. The one–month long program, consisting of a string of various activities, will open a window into the richness of the European Union’s different cultural traditions with inspiring performances and information activities.
On the 9th of May, the European Union marks the symbolic date when Robert Schuman – the former French Minister of Foreign Affairs – put forward his ideas on a united Europe to bring lasting peace and prosperity to our continent. This historical declaration and its great significance continue to lead the integration project on the European continent and inspire partnerships we forge beyond the borders of Europe. Europe Day has become the symbol of a new beginning, of a free and successful way of peaceful cooperation between sovereign nations, based on shared values and common interests, including the richness of European cultures – the element which underpins the continued success of the European integration.
“Europe Day” is also the occasion for activities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and strengthen the many bonds that Europe has established with nations around the world, including Vietnam.
Since the inception in Vietnam 12 years ago, the “Europe Days” program has gained resounding success and growing public attention, thus establishing itself as a prominent feature in the Vietnamese cultural calendar.
With a remarkably diverse line-up of activities in the coming days, the “Europe Days 2016” program offers a combination of music, cinema, sport, gastronomy, science and innovation. The diversity of topics is anticipated to keep you and your knowledge entertained, inspired and enriched.
Highlights of the “Europe Days 2016” program in Vietnam include:
A prominent event is the Europe Day concert, entitled “Europe Meets Asia in Jazz”. The internationally renowned jazz singer Michael Schiefel from Germany unites musicians from Europe and Vietnam within the scope of an exceptional concert in Hanoi. Schiefel is accompanied by the Italian percussionist Davide Pasqualini, the Polish jazz guitarist Gabriel Niedziela and the German cellist Jörg Brinkmann. Together with the Vietnamese saxophonist Nguyen Bao Long and the pianist Nguyen Huu Vuong of the ensemble JumpforJazz, Europe and Vietnam will merge in jazz rhythms. The Gala concert will be a celebration of the multiculturalism of jazz.
The musical scene of the “Europe Days 2016” will be enriched by a staging of the world’s famous opera “Magic Flute” in full length and original language for the first time in HCMC. The Magic Flute opera, premiered in Vienna in 1791, is one of the most well-known operas in the world. To date, first visitors and experienced opera visitors alike are fascinated by the performance. The opera will be directed by David Hermann and conducted by Trần Nhật Minh in a German – Vietnamese cooperation.
The annual European Film Festival promises to delight Vietnamese spectators with 13 inspiring films, presenting a variety of enchanting works by European film makers. It is a combination of films, ranging from drama, comedy to thriller. It is a journey reflecting dreams, passion, fear and frustration, fun and joy, mistakes and recognition – of every European.
The diversity of European cultural traditions will manifest itself in the European Literature events in Hanoi and for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City, organised by the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and the EU Delegation. At the events, Vietnamese readers will have chances to enjoy new books from Belgium (Wallonia – Brussels), France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the UK. In addition to the presentation of the books, there will be other opportunities for readers to meet authors, listen to talks and readings, or register for workshops on creative writing.
A high – level seminar, entitled “Viet Nam – EU Cooperation: Sharing Experiences of Facing Common Challenges – Green Growth and Sustainable Development“, will be held by the EU Delegation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to highlight the role and position of the EU related to the PCA and to review the current trends of Vietnam-EU partnership as well as emerging EU-issues of relevance for Vietnam.
For audiences those who have strong interest in European innovation and science, they will be offered two great events in the “Europe Days 2016” program: ASEAN – EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days and TEDx Innovations from Europe and Vietnam. For the first event, it will consist of a dozen of scientific workshops and innovation exhibition from May 10 to May 12 in Hanoi, serving as an ideal occasion for networking and exchange ideas in the thematic areas health, water management and environment, food, security and safety, and Innovation. The latter one, based on the TED-concept, will receive inspiring speakers from Europe and Vietnam who will share ground-breaking urban and health innovations, ranging from green architecture and more efficient waste collection, to new developments related to fighting infectious diseases and more reliable and tailored medicines.
The annual European Food Festival will come back on 14 May, offering authentic European cuisine, cooking demonstrations by chefs from leading European hotels and restaurants in Hanoi. A variety of special European products will be presented for the first time ever in Vietnam.
In the conviction that there is no better way to improve understanding between Europeans and Vietnamese than through people to people exchanges, in particular involving the young generations, the EU Delegation will run a 5-day long online ‘Euro 2016 Quiz’ on its Facebook fan-page: https://www.facebook.com/EUandVietnam to kick – off Euro Cup 2016 in France. The three main prizes consist of a trip to France: including a two-way ticket to Paris, accommodation and, last but not least, a ticket to the final match of Euro 2016.

Chamber Concert with Musina Amore String Quartet of VNSO
Fri 27 May 2016, 8 pm
Goethe Institut
56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi
Trinh Minh Hien: Violin I
Tran Thuy Ha: Violin II
Tran Ngoc Thuy: Viola
Dao Tuyet Trinh: Cello
This year, the Goethe-Institut Hanoi is hosting two chamber concerts. Lovers of string quartets can look forward to our second concert evening that starts with the Quartet No. 4, Op. 18, by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was composed in 1799 and consists of four movements. It is presumed that Beethoven dedicated the dramatic first movement to Lady Josephine Brunsvik, whom he got to know while he was composing the quartets Op. 18. She and her sister had been taking piano lessons with Beethoven which is when it is said the composer fell in love with Lady Brunsvik.
The second part of the program continues with catchy melodies: Alexander Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D major was composed in 1881 – hence about 100 years after Beethoven’s quartet – and also consists of four movements. The melody of the first part returns as a theme in the first movement again and again. It is considered to be one of the best examples of Borodin’s lyrical expression of the sonata form. The third movement, a ”Notturno”, is probably the most famous movement of Borodin’s quartet.
Program
L. v. Beethoven – String Quartet No. 4, Op. 18
A. Borodin – String Quartet No. 2 in D major
Free tickets are available from Monday, May 23, 9am at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi. Due to the limited number of seats we kindly ask only visitors from the age of 12 and up to come.

Exhibition “Nguyen Xuan Tiep & Soliloquy”
Exhibition: 12 – 21 May 2016
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum
66 Nguyen Thai Hoc St. Hanoi
Come to exhibition “Nguyen Xuan Tiep & Soliloquy” by artist Nguyen Xuan Tiep.
“Everything is stripped bare to the core. Emotions sneak in, encircle and spread through every dimension of the painting when we have our eyes upon the Fairy and then the shape-shifting strange birds, the characters of the leaves, wind, and water which are not meant to be understood.
It seems like the Vietnamese Dó Paper has laid down a Sacred Temple for Nguyen Xuan Tiep’s spirit to soar, to take off on a solo adventure, to soliloquize to find reveries in the realm of this temporary human life.
Just silently waiting for beauty and the grace of Zen. The Bodhi leaves within the painting where the eyes of anyone who, after a brief moment of calmness, has reached enlightenment.”
– Artist Luong Xuan Doan –

Historic Ao Dais from the collection of Thai Kim Lan presented in a multimedia installation by Veronika Witte.
After the success of the exhibition of the private collection of Thai Kim Lan in Hanoi last year, the gorgeous historic Ao Dais from the Emperors court in Hue return to their place of origin. The Goethe-Institut Hanoi presents the collection in a multimedia installation by Veronika Witte at the Hue Cultural Museum.
The garments will be embedded in an elaborate multimedia space installation with elements from daily life in Vietnam as well as staged within two video performances. Through the appropriation, usage, reservation and the disappearance of Ao Dais they acquired meaning and importance – now their stories will be told in this exhibition at the Hue Cultural Museum.
In the interview installation, eight individuals talk with each other about the Ao Dais without ever having met – like the 95-year-old court lady of the Empress and the 19-year-old student. Fictional conversations about preserving, time and the meaning of Ao Dais in their own lives develop.
The exhibition’s opening on May 18, 2016, is followed by a talk with the artists Thai Kim Lan and Veronika Witte. Admission is free.
Veronika Witte has been working in Berlin since 1998 in the fields of sculpture, video and scenic installations and always blurring the lines between visual arts, music and opera. From 1988 to 1993 she studied at the Ecôle Nationale Supérièure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She received awards and grants in Israel, France and Germany, among others. Her scenic installations and performances were shown at the Museum Ludwig in Aachen, the Stadtgalerie in Saarbrücken, the Galerie Quang in Paris and the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin. In 2010, the artist came to Vietnam to give lectures and hold workshops at various art academies in Hanoi, Hue and Saigon.
Thai Kim Lan was born in Hue and studied philosophy and German as a foreign language in Vietnam and Germany. In 1976 she received her PhD in philosophy at the LMU in Munich and was teaching there until 2007 as a private lecturer for comparative philosophy. Since 1994 she has been teaching in Ho Chi Minh City and Hue. She is co-founder of two associations for German-Vietnamese encounters. Besides her publications in the field of philosophy, Thai Kim Lan wrote cookbooks, essays and poems and translated texts of German authors and poets, amongst them Bertolt Brecht. Poems from her own bilingual volume of poems “In einem kälteren Land – Lanh hon xu minh” (“In a colder country”) won prices in Germany and Vietnam.

In the 1st week, let’s enjoy the film screening of “Eat Drink Man Woman” directed by Ang Lee, his first work after coming back from the US.

In 1994, the film received the Asia Pacific Film Festival Award for Best Film, and in 1995 it received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Many of the cast members had appeared in Ang Lee’s previous films. Sihung Lung and Ah Lei Gua played central elderly figures dealing with the transition from tradition to modernity in ‘The Wedding Banquet’, in which Winston Chao also starred. These three films show the tensions between the generations of a Confucian family, between East and West, and between tradition and modernity. They form what has been called Lee’s ‘Father Knows Best’ trilogy.

The festival, showcasing 13 contemporary films drawn from 13 EU’s member countries, will be opened in Hanoi on 13 May, in Danang on 14 May and in Ho Chi Minh city on 15 May 2016.
This annual cultural event is jointly organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam, the Embassies of EU Member States and the European Cultural Institutes, providing an in-depth portrait of Europe including its lifestyle, culture and tradition from East to West thus helping to enhance the mutual understanding among the people.
EFF2016 strives to reflect the excellence, innovation, and diversity of European cinema in Vietnam, through a collection of the drama, comedy, tragedy, and passion of the moving image. Over the span of two weeks, the 17th edition of the festival brings audiences a wide selection of entertaining, challenging and delightful films, never-before-seen in town. Films screened have encountered success in their country of origin. Some of the films have won highly acclaimed national and international awards.
“The silver screen world has no borders. No passports or visas are required to take you from one country to another. Cinema has successfully shared diverse culture, people, histories and perspectives to audiences from across the globe for over a century. As the birthplace of cinematography and home to a number of prestigious international film festivals, Europe is renowned for its cinema heritage. By maintaining the presentation of European silver screen world in Vietnam, the European Union hopes to break down language and cultural barriers aiming to involve people from across the spectrum of the Vietnamese society. This cultural event is believed to be an excellent bridge to bring the people closer.” said Head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, Ambassador Bruno Angelet.
Found in 2000, the European Film Festival has become a prominent and anticipated annual cultural event Vietnam. It has established itself as a credible avenue to bring new and captivating aspects of European culture to the attraction of Vietnamese people, by showcasing films that would otherwise not be shown in Vietnamese commercial cinemas.
This cinematic event is part of a broader series of “Europe Days 2016” events clustered around Europe Day (9 May), a cycle which since its inception in 2004 has gained a high profile in the cultural life of Vietnamese people.

Now! Mae (Anna Posch) roams the streets of Vienna as a punk in her dead brother’s Converse shoes. She lives on canned beer, sprays walls, tries her hand at poetry slams. She’s not interested in bourgeois life but in extreme experiences. When she is sent to an Aids center to work off a punishment, she meets and falls in love with Paul (Markus Subramaniam).
CHUCKS tells the featherlight story of growing up between life and death. Full of humor, at times rebelliously loud, when extremely tender – completely in the spirit of the literary version it is based on the successful novel by Cornelia Travnicek about which Clemens J. Setz once wrote:
“If I get stuck in a lift with a character of contemporary literature, I would want it to be Mae. I don’t know whether I would come out safe and sound, but it would be worth it.”

In 1980, it became the first designated intangible cultural asset of the city.
The origin of Kawashima-bayashi is thought to be the annual festivals performed by farmers to thank the nature spirits for good harvest. Nowadays, they have important role not only in the seasonal festival (like summer festival, New Year’s festival) or feast.

Vietnamese Filmmaker Nguyen Trinh Thi participates in “Hero Mother” Exhibition in Berlin
Opening: 13 May 2016, 7-11 pm (local time)
Exhibition: 14 May – 12 Jun 2016
Symposium: 12 Jun 2016
Studio 1 & MOMENTUM Gallery
Kunstquartier Bethanien
Mariannenplatz 2, Berlin Kreuzberg
An art exhibition entitled “BEYOND BALAGAN!!! HERO MOTHER: Contemporary Art by Post-Communist Women – Rethinking Heroism” will take place from 14 May to 12 June in Berlin, with the participation of 30 women artists from 20 countries with communist legacies.
Filmmaker Nguyen Trinh Thi will represent Vietnam to take part in the exhibition.
Her Mother will present artworks by these contemporary women artists, who are either born in, or are based in, the states that used to (or still) practice state socialism. Their artworks, through a variety of media, address and defy the frighteningly regressive political agendas in many Eastern European countries today, outing it in the context of broader developments worldwide.
The exhibition and the discursive program focus on the role of gender, citizenship, nationalism, migration and personal freedom, as well as the relation between artists and institutions such as state structures. It looks at the ramifications of traditionalist political forces, as they are unleashed upon women, the queer community and other minorities at a time of increasingly resurgent conservative values.
The works shown in this exhibition will integrate time into their form and their content, including – but not limited to – video, performance, installation, public art, situationist action, interactive works and social engagement, sound, photography, text, and web-based work.
Her Mother is part of MOMENTUM’s program for 2016, consisting of a series of events, residencies and exhibitions called BEYOND BALAGAN, which inquires into contemporary art and its relation to life.
For more information about the exhibition, please visit the organizer’s website.
Nguyen Trinh Thi studied journalism, photography, international relations and ethnographic film in the United States. Her films and video art works have been shown at festivals and art exhibitions across Asia, Europe, and the USA – including Jeu de Paume, Paris; CAPC musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux; the Lyon Biennale 2015; Asian Art Biennial 2015, Taiwan; Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial 2014; Singapore Biennale 2013; Jakarta Biennale 2013; Oberhausen International Film Festival; Bangkok Experimental Film Festival; Artist Films International; DEN FRIE Centre of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen; and Kuandu Biennale, Taipei.

Bold Strokes – Celebration of Life and Art
Opening: Wed 11 May 2016, 6 pm
Duration: 11 – 31 May 2016
Art Vietnam Gallery
2nd floor, 24 Ly Quoc Su Str, Hanoi
As the world is reeling with political fracture, environmental disaster, spiritual confusion, economic and familial breakdown, art holds its unique place as a beacon of awareness and a place of refuge.
Art Vietnam Gallery is pleased to present Bold Strokes, an celebration of what we feel is an expression of the best and brightest evolution of art coming out of Vietnam today.
We are presenting the innovative works of our gallery artists from over the years complimented by the works of some new emerging artists with their imaginative, thought provoking works; The ForeFinger 2015 sculpture by Tran Tuan from Hue recently presented in The Land of Distortion exhibition at the Bildmusset Museum in Sweden, juxtaposed with recent video works, Another Place Across the River 2013-4 by Truong Cong Tung from HCMC and the Bui Cong Khanh Artist in Residence Playhouse Square video from the Cleveland Foundation Creative Fusion Workshop that expose modern day life and the struggle for existence in a rapidly changing world.
We have selected an early video of Gang of Five pioneer and curator Tran Luong, Mao Khe 2001, which depicts the harsh conditions of the coal miners and includes Luong’s notable performance Steamed Rice Man, his classic, timeless video. Bold inscriptions of text in abstract forms figure extensively in this show. In contrast to the calligraphic works of the avant garde Zenei Gang of Five Nom scholars, Nguyen Duc Dung, Tran Trong Duong, Nguyen Quang Thang and Phan Van Tuan, who present the ancient Vietnamese Nom script in a contemporary styling, we have the abstract calligraphic musings of Nguyen Cam Day and Night 2 2008 and the elusive text of the Unsent Letter 2015 series of Le Thua Tien from Hue. Le Quoc Viet, artist, scholar and founder of Zenei presents his series of scrolls, This is what I heard 2008, a combination of painting, woodblock prints, rubbings and calligraphy that exemplify the wide and varied use of text, abstract and concrete. Dang Anh Viet Exploration 04 2012 is a departure from the more classic Chinese ink painting as the artist paints on glass and then prints the paper, letting the flow of water and ink transform and flow freely on the surface.
Nguyen Huu Tram Kha‘s biomorphic work, The Persistent Growth 2015, a wooden incised cut sculpture with imprints of silk exudes a modulating sense of organic femininity while the lacquer sculpted torso, Armor 2014 by Phi Phi Oanh, stands firm, resolute with a sense of strength, purpose and power. Nguyen Manh Hung, The Meeting 2015 and Checkpoint 2014 continues to delight with his sardonic, humorous depictions of a country shifting from an ancient, traditional culture headlong into modern day commercialism. Simon Redington‘s wood cut, Room Seven Satan’s Cage 2003, a reference to the incarcerations of imperialism, reflects the somber past. Scholar, artist Nguyen The Son‘s photo reliefs, Obama Dentist 2012 and Harmony, Autumn Moon, Fresh Wind 2013, depict the rapid transformation of the physical landscape of Hanoi and its social ramifications on the society.
Maritta Nurmi, Birds and Birds 2013, and No Birds 2013, shimmery silver leaf surfaces framed in textiles with images of the leaves of the frangipani trees, commonly found at the entrance of all pagodas, lead us into a contemplation of the world beyond the physical realm. Her Inside, Outside circular disc, and the Inside, Outside, Upside table are common everyday objects elevated to the sublime with their contemplative imagery of the seated Buddha hidden amongst the leaves.
Dinh Y Nhi‘s Joy of Life 2015, perhaps a strident version to some, exemplifies the bold expression of the artist who was the first female practitioner to break with the tradition of accepted feminine norm.
The Beauty VIII 2010 by Ha Tri Hieu is yet another version of femininity, bold and beautiful in its simplicity which contrasts stylistically with Dinh Thi Tham Poong‘s Fish and the Forest, 2015 and yet both works retain the artists’ simplicity and love of the natural expression of life.
Tran Hoang Son and Diep Quy Hai‘s Zodiac lacquer plates depict a time honored tradition for the TET holiday season when artists created zodiac creatures to ring in the new year. Lolo Zazar‘s creations of wooden sculpted Zodiac animals covered in photos of the old walls of Hanoi present a modern, playful twist.
Truong Tan, The Protector 2016, and Black Cloud on the Sky in the Day of Demonstration 2016, one of Vietnam’s leading international artists, lacquer compositions continue the artists dialogue with identity and how to carve out a space in this fractured world.
Nguyen Nghia Cuong‘s Marilyn Visiting the Orient 2010 plays with pop culture meeting Asia with his humorous Happy Buddha crowning Marilyn Monroe, the quintessential symbol of American beauty. Mai Dac Linh‘s The Resplendent Past VIII 2005 references the past Dong Son drum culture with a quiet reverence to Buddhism. Fellow lacquer artist Trinh Quoc Chien also uses Buddhist imagery and cosmic symbols in his work on the three existences, The Past, Present and Future 2014.
How can I join them 2011, a highly accomplished work on silk, another traditional Vietnamese medium used in a modern style by Nguyen Thi Chau Giang is a testimony to the outsider culture that is omnipresent for female artists.Nguyen Minh Thanh‘s Diamonds 2004 is the work of a highly respected artist who has retreated and chosen a solitary, meditative style of life. This is a work concerning destiny and a reflection of what is to come.
The silk scrolls and bronze sculptures of Nguyen Thi Chinh Le are a series of the daily activities of the Zen Buddhist monks. Each silk painting has a visual representation of the figures in silk complimented by a physical representation in bronze, the Yin and Yang of life.
Vu Kim Thu‘s light sculptures composed of Do paper from Vietnam and Washi paper from Japan are covered with miniature drawings that the artists weaves into her light constructions.
In Miniature of Space #7, #41 and #15, 2013 the artist experiments in the new form of light sculpture. She delves deeper than just the material itself and incorporates it into a dwelling in daily life.
Buddhist scholar and art critic Phan Cam Thuong’s Beside the flowing river 2002 is a classic work that uses the ancient woodblock print but with his signature flowing brush style.Teacher to many of the artists presented in this show, Thuong now spends most of his time on research and critical writing on Vietnamese art.
The Dream 2015, a selection of the parts of the Honda Dream motorcycle, was created in marble with the help of local Vietnamese craftsmen from Danang by Spanish artist Jorge Rivera. Each motorcycle part is juxtaposed on a pedestal symbolizing icons of ancient Vietnamese culture.
Dinh Cong Dat, Hanoi Sculptor, creates all manner of playful creatures and statues out of fiberglass then painted with lacquer. His iconic Schoolboys, Schoolgirls, Standing Buddhas and Sitting Buddhas are representative of a playful interpretation of tradition into modernity. Black and white photographs of the 54 ethnic minorities by Sebastien Laval from the early 1990’s have given way to the photographer’s latest body of work, Hanoi 18h/6h, Hue 18h/6h. These works, all taken from 6pm until 6am with no artificial light possess a ghostly, painterly atmosphere that draws the viewer into a magical, mysterious world.
On the cusp on the American presidential visit to Vietnam in late May, the gallery would also like to highlight the artistic exchange of artists from America to Vietnam that has contributed to the healing of the wounds of the past through the beauty of the spirit. David Thomas, artist and founder of the Indochina Arts Partnership in Boston, has brought over 100 artists from Vietnam for residencies in the US and presented numerous exhibitions in his effort to expose Vietnamese art. His Jesus Buddha 2/5 2011 is a reflection of the man himself with one half of his existence in the West and one half in the East.
In 2015 Mark Cooper spent extensive time in Vietnam in a workshop at the Muong Museum in Hoa Binh making collaborative works of art with several Vietnamese artists that were presented in the Muong Museum in Hoa Binh, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and the Vietnam Fine Arts University in Hanoi. His amorphic ceramics reflect the dynamism of his country tempered by the grace and dignity of the East.
Donald Damask, a fine printmaker from New York, came to Vietnam in 2005. Fascinated with the tactile nature of the traditional handmade Do paper, he created a series of works, Blood, Sweat and Tears, that project his anguish and sorrow over the tragedy of war.
Catherine Karnow has a long legacy in Vietnam. Her father, Stanley Karnow, a journalist and writer, is the highly respected author of the seminal book and Emmy award winning documentary on the country, Vietnam: a History.
Catherine’s first visited Vietnam in 1990 and immersed herself in the life and the culture of the Vietnamese. Her photographs reflect the unique perspective of the consummate insider and are evocative of a country opening its arms to the international world. The Barber 2014 is a timeless piece, a bit of nostalgia tempered with contemporary society.
This wide array of superlative works are a small representation of a dynamic country on the move. They are by no means all that Vietnam has to offer, they are but a small part. We would like to honor all of the artists of Vietnam who have contributed so much to the global understanding of a very unique and dynamic country.
Music Night with Ratatat from New York
Sun 22 May 2016, 8 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi
New York City experimental rock-meets-electronica duo consisting of Mike Stroud on guitar, melodica, synthesizers, percussion, and producer Evan Mast on bass, synthesizers & percussion.
NPR on their latest album (2015), Magnifique:
On the band’s fifth album, Brooklynites Mike Stroud and Evan Mast built sleek, propulsive instrumentals using a spare palette of guitars, synthesizers and simple percussion in such a way that the music sounds both triumphant and understated. These are rock instrumentals that needn’t overcompensate for their lack of words; they don’t strain to be heard or scramble to stand out, but instead convey coolness that seems effortless.
What Magnifique — Ratatat’s first album since the more experimental LP4 five summers ago — lacks in showy flamboyance or wholly surprising sounds, it possesses in breezy smoothness that proves versatile. The first single, “Cream On Chrome,” has the most overt zippiness to it, but even it never works up a sweat or wastes a breath. When Ratatat kicks up a few ’80s-style hard-rock guitar solos in “Pricks Of Brightness,” they function as some of the most easygoing heroics you’ll ever hear.
Elsewhere on Magnifique, the duo’s instrumentals seem suited to accompany mixed drinks at a beachside restaurant: At several points in “Drift,” Ratatat calms down enough to emit a noise that closely resembles a cat’s purr, while “Supreme” sways softly such that it attracts a chirping bird. If Magnifique unfolds like a snappy summer movie, “I Will Return” is there at the end to burble euphorically over the closing credits, even going so far as to promise a sequel right in its title. Here’s hoping so.

Vietnam – Korea Clay Painting Exhibition
Opening: Thu 05 May 2016, 5 pm
Exhibition: 06 – 14 May 2016
Korean Cultural Centre
49 Nguyễn Du, Hà Nội
Clay Painting is a popular art form in Vietnam and Korea. To celebrate the 10th year of establishment, the exhibition “Vietnam – Korea Clay Painting” will be the first and only experience for flower and art lovers to enjoy a space of colorful flowers in the typical charming scenery of Korea and Vietnam. The exhibition will feature 27 clay paintings in different sizes themed on flowers as lotus, sesame buds, roses, orchids, daisies, cherry, flowering canola, etc…
Talking about her career path in clay paintings, Huong Thuy said: “To have a clay flower, we must follow many steps. Firstly, mix colors with clay until having desired colors, then use the roller to make specific thickness depending on the type of flower. Then use a mold to cut each petal, each leaf and then shape them. Sewing each flower requires high level skills to make flowers alive. When they become dry, they must be soft like the real flowers. Then paint and draw details on the petals to get desired flowers. The artist need to squeeze entirely by hand the pistil, flower buds. Then transplant the details of flowers together and finally twigs and flower arrangements.”
About the artist:
Huong Thuy was born in 1976 in Hanoi and graduated from the Academy of Journalism and Communication. From 1998 – 2008 she was a cultural journalist of Post Newspaper. In 2015, she started making 3D clay flower paintings.
Free entry.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE is a 2000 Hong Kong film directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung. It premiered on 20 May 2000, at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d’Or.
The film’s original Chinese title, meaning “the age of blossoms”; or “the flowery years” – Chinese metaphor for the fleeting time of youth, beauty and love – derives from a song of the same name by Zhou Xuan from a 1946 film. The English title derives from the song, ‘I’m in the Mood for Love’. Wong had planned to name the film ‘Secrets’, until listening to the song late in post-production.
The movie forms the second part of an informal trilogy: The first part was ‘Days of Being Wild’ (released in 1991) and the last part was 2046 (released in 2004).

Les Arômes 2016 Cultivates Culinary Savoir-Faire
29 Apr – 04 Jun 2016
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
15 Ngo Quyen Str, Hanoi
Like Tet, some special events require more than the few official days allocated to them, and this year the Hotel Metropole’s Hanoi’s Les Arômes Festival 2016 is one such celebration.
What was last year but a four-day culinary festival at the country’s most storied hotel is this year a six-week run of wine dinners, bread-baking workshop and other special events.
Headlining this year’s event is Chef Christophe Grilo, a 38-year-old executive pastry chef and baker who has cooked for such Hollywood stars as Brad Pitt, Arnold Schwarzenegger and singer Barbra Streisand.
At the Metropole, Grilo will conduct a ‘Bread Master Class’ on May 19 by invitation only. On May 20, the Metropole will introduce Grilo’s new bread collection throughout the hotel’s dining venues, and will begin retailing the collection at L’Epicerie. And one night later, Grilo will help ‘Uncork the Summer’ in Les Arômes’ special picnic dinner at La Veranda, featuring wines by Chateau Grand Verdus. With live jazz music, a bread counter, cold cuts station, this is truly a unique summer night to remember.
The Chateau Grand Verdus vintages hail from from hilly terroir about 20 kilometers east of Bordeaux, and are bottled by a family that’s been minding those vineyards through four generations. Famous for its reds, whites and rosés, its wines have won superior ratings in recent years in wine-centric media from Decanter to the Wine Enthusiast.
Grilo, meanwhile, has worked at a succession of Michelin-star establishments, and literally climbed the rungs from one-star to three-star restaurants, winning renown as one of France’s most promising young bakers.
He relocated to Asia in 2004, working for two major hotel brands before assuming a leadership position in the Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie. In 2013, Grilo started up the Bakery Artisan Original, the B.A.O., where they resort to traditional methods to produce breads with deeper flavours and textures.
This year’s festival, the 9th annual at the Metropole, kicks off on April 29 at La Veranda with a wine dinner featuring Craggy Wines from New Zealand, followed by La Nuit by Sofitel on 27th May, a night of glamour at Angelina restaurant & lounge, and concludes June 4 with a wine dinner featuring Bordeaux’s famous Domaine de Chevalier at L’Orangerie.
OvO / Wừu / Sound Awakener / Đẻ
Sun 15 May 2016, 7 pm
REC Room, Floor 20, Hanoi Creative City, 1 Luong Yen, Hanoi
This is perhaps not so obvious, but anyone who has been to one of the live gigs The Onion Cellar put on circa 2013, 2014 – and how could one ever forget about Zeni Geva, The Observatory, MoE, about Staer, CoCC, or Proportions? – might have realised that dark, noisy, violent and extreme ‘rock-ish and metal-ish’ musics form an important part of our multi-faceted identity.
And after a considerably lengthy absence from the live stages of Vietnam, we are happy to turn up the volume to 11 again, with this REC Room Hanoi debut co-headlined by ‘minimal extreme-metalists’ / giants of the global left-field underground OVO (Italy) and Vietnamese-grindcore purveyors WỪU – a name that perhaps needs no introduction; plus support from two young, promising acts representative of the new crop of Vietnamese talents: SOUND AWAKENER (noise) and ĐẺ (grindcore).
Obviously The Onion Cellar’s noisiest gig to date – which does say something. Brace yourself.
OvO’s drummer Bruno Dorella describing the duo (via numerous interviews):
“A little masked girl singing like the scariest growler in her made up language, torturing a detuned guitar. A big masked guy playing a little drum set without a kick, just using his arms, and sounding like a double-kick heavy metal drummer.
I met Stefania at a Sepultura show, in 1996. We both grew up with punk, metal and hardcore. We still listen to them, but we’re open to every kind of music.”
“..,and I guess we’ll never play a standard one. Whenever we play something it can sound more like sludge, noise, doom, black, stoner, rock and roll, but I think I’m not too arrogant if I say that there’s nothing else like OvO. And I don’t even think we’re so strange and bizarre.
She’s a natural born phenomenon. Her voice sounds like a trained opera singer mixed with the wildest male growler linked to a chain of weird pedal effects… but it’s all natural and she does it without any training.”
“Considering the buzz surrounding the band and their music, the demand for trippy, demonic fem-metal is active and healthy.” (Blistering website on OvO)
After a lengthy hiatus, ‘the geniuses are now back’.
“WỪU don’t spare much in their arsenal, laying down all manner of blasts, shreds, breakdowns, death metal riffs, punk riffs, screams, growls, pig squeals, yelps and more besides.
Named after a local hero in the war against the Colonial French, Vietnamese grindcore powerhouse WỪU are just as furious and uncompromising as their namesake.
Bringing it more than the standard grindcore influences, their 2011 debut ‘888’ takes in everything from old school death metal to more experimental, eclectic and electronic styles, bringing them to the attention of internet label Grindcore Karaoke run by Arogaphobic Nosebleed’s J Randall. WỪU’s second album – Hoang Tưởng (Paranoia) – came out in 2012 via Bloody Chunks Records, a label run by Trung Loki, key member of WỪU and numerous other extreme bands of Saigon.” (Obscene Extreme festival)
SOUND AWAKENER (noise, Hà Nội)
WỪU (grindcore, Saigon)
The experimental musician and sound artist behind the alias Sound Awakener has been composing and playing experimental music since 2011. She has been creating sonic waves in Hanoi’s underground music scene for the last couple of years. With an extraordinary understanding of tones and tunes and an ear for everyday sounds she can turn into music she works both on solo projects and has teamed up with artists working across various media and from around the world to add audio elements to visual experiences.
ĐẺ (grindcore, Hà Nội / Sài Gòn)
ĐẺ was founded in early 2016 by 3 young members Đức Lùn, Hưng Béo and Tín Mập. Even though they have performed live twice the band have never had a proper practice together. That explains their freestyle performance influenced by noise and experimental.

Exhibition “Whisper of Memory”
Opening: Sun 15 May 2016, 6 pm
Exhibition: 15 – 29 May 2016
Nha San Collective
15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi
Nha San Collective is pleased to present Israeli artist Belle Shafir’s solo exhibition, entitled “Whisper of Memory”. Through her animated videos, drawings inspired from old photographs of her family and installation work with knitted horsehair, Belle Shafir explores the notions of memory imprinted in history and crossing cultures as an initiative of shaping identity. The exhibition is made possible with the support of the Embassy of Israel in Vietnam.
***
“What is memory? What does the brain choose to remember? And what distinguishes memory from remembrance? These issues have, in recent years, stood at the heart of Belle Shafir’s artistic research. This research focuses on the invisible, elusive, internal processes that cause some things to sink into the depths of our memory and allow other experiences, long forgotten in its chaotic archives, to be recovered and made real.
Shafir’s continuous, reflexive work process takes her back to the sights of her childhood and youth, to the stories of the earlier generations of her family, when they had resided in other countries. Through these, her own memories, she examines the mechanisms of memory, and how memories shape our identities. The motivation for this process is neither nostalgia nor the desire to document the past, but rather the awareness of the gap between the memory itself, and its recollection, which takes place place many years after the events had occurred (or not), as well as of the futility of the attempt to capture a memory and view it as absolute.
The decision to explore these issues and their relation to her personal, split and conflict-ridden identity has pulled the carpet from under Shafir’s feet. It is an experience akin to getting lost in the historical thicket of one who wanders between cultures; between the east and the west, between German and Israeli identities, while looming above it all, like a dark cloud, is the fact of her being the daughter of Polish Holocaust survivors, who had immigrated to Germany at the end of World War II.”
About the artist:
Belle Shafir is a multi-disciplinary artist. Born 1953 in Germany, Shafir currently lives and works in Tel Aviv. She has been an active artist in Israel and abroad for over three decades and has presented her works in solo and group exhibitions at prominent venues, including: Tel Aviv Museum, Petach Tikva Museum, Herzliya Museum (Israel), Housatonic Museum, Bridgeport, Connecticut, A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn (USA), The Jewish Culture Museum, Veitshoechheim (Germany) and other galleries and museums around the world. Throughout the years Shafir participated in prestigious residencies such as Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and her works were purchased by the collections of the Modern Art Museum of Portofino, Italy, Davis Museum in Barcelona (Spain) and private collectors across the globe.

Different groups of readers, from kids to adults with a variety of reading tastes, will all be able to find novels that match their interests and ignite their imaginations as they explore literature from eight European countries – Denmark, Germany, France, Sweden, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Belgium.
In 2016, the world of literature is also celebrating the work of two famous authors – the British playwright William Shakespeare and the Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes, author of the famous Don Quixote. 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and Cervantes, therefore, during European Literature Days, Britain will host three events – a conference, a talk, and a workshop celebrating Shakespeare; and Spain will host a presentation celebrating Miguel de Cervantes and his seminal work – The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha.
Vietnamese readers of European literature might already be familiar with children’s characters from French and British literature like Nicolas, the Little Prince, Pippi Longstocking and Emil of Lonneberga. Many more European books have now been translated into Vietnamese for the first time. These newly translated works, many of which are award-winning titles, will be showcased in book presentations and conferences. These include «Wisdom and Destiny» by Maurice Maeterlinck (Wallonia-Brussels – Nobel prize 1911), «Don’t cry» by Lydie Salvayre (France – Goncourt prize 2014), “War memoirs” by Charles De Gaulle (France), “Geschmack von Apfelkernen” by Katharina Hagena, «Das Schloss» by Franz Kafka (Germany) and a wide range of children book series like “Ulysses Moore” Vol. 4, 5 and 6 (Italy), the three – volume Rico and Oskar series (Germany), «Speaking English with Martine» (Wallonia-Brussels), “Philosophy for teenagers” (France), and the illustrated children’s series «Secrets Children Need to Know» (Sweden).
Other events have also been adopted to make the most of this year’s European Literature Days, including a discussion about historical fiction and an exhibition of illuminated picture books (Denmark), a reading of «Sungs Laden» by Karin Kalisa (Germany), a writing competition and a workshop on drawing young characters (France), a movie screening, and a European Books Discount Festival on Book Street (HCMC). Calling all literature lovers! Come and enjoy!

”Into Darkness” – Solo Exhibition by Vu Kim Thu
Opening: Fri 06 May 2016, 6.30 pm
Exhibition: 06 – 31 May 2016, 8 am – 10 pm
Manzi Art Space
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi
Manzi is delighted to present Vu Kim Thu’s solo exhibition ‘Into Darkness’.
‘Into Darkness’ is the outcome of Kim Thu’s continuous experimentation in combining Japanese Washi with Vietnamese Dzo paper, and line drawing with lighting. The project-in-progress started in 2013 with Kim Thu’s residency at Mino Paper Art Village (Mino, Japan) where she learnt the art of Washi and lantern. It later developed into a light installation at her 2014 residency at Sapporo Artist in Residence Program (Hokkaido, Japan). The artist’s 2015 experimentation with the project at ECO Art Project (Muong Art Studio, Hoa Binh, Vietnam) saw her including elements of space and light design.
“My world is a miniature world. It consists of landscape, nature, architecture and abstract mark making and line drawing. It forms a three-dimensional map, possibly of a city, possibly an imaginary one. These images change as I arrive at a new destination, and as my personal experience and impression of that place begin to form. As a traveler, I navigate a new city by synthesizing its repeated forms, fragmentations, and architectural spaces with memory and observation. I reimagine the place in the form of a map and with my personal visualization. I start with one small detail by creating a mark – one that never stops spreading outwards. And from there, the city keeps growing and growing…”
About the artist:
Vu Kim Thu was born in 1976 in Hanoi, graduated her BFA from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1999, Vietnam and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, United States in 2003. Thu has been participated in a number of residencies worldwide including Vermont Studio Center (USA) Goyang National Art studio, (Korea), Sanskriti Kendra (India), Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen (Germany), Mc Coll Center of Visual Art (USA), Rockefeller Bellagio Center (Italy), Museum of Contemporary Art, A Coruna (Spain).
In the past three years, Thu was interested in Japanese culture and her studies of Washi paper leads her to new experimentation with paper sculpture and lighting based on her current experience in three residencies in Japan: Kamiyama Artists in Residence Program, Mino Paper Art Village and Sapporo Artist in Residence Program.

HCMC – Opera “The Magic Flute”
07 and 08 May 2016, 8 pm
Ho Chi Minh City Opera House
7 Lam Son Square, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
Papageno wants Papagena – Tamino wants Pamina. But there is no easy way to love! Every single protagonist has to pass a difficult exam: they have to choose between murder and suicide, abstain from meat and drink or even from speaking and singing. The only tools they have to help them along their dangerous way are a magic flute and a carillon.
The Magic Flute, which premiered in Vienna in 1791, is one of the world’s best known operas. To this day audiences are fascinated with the work, whether they are new to opera or experienced opera buffs. The music was created by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the actor and writer Emanuel Schikaneder contributed the libretto. For the first time now, The Magic Flute will be performed in full length and in original language in Ho-Chi-Minh-City as a German-Vietnamese cooperation directed by David Hermann and conducted by Trần Nhật Minh.
Franco-German opera director David Hermann studied stage direction at the University for Music ‘Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin. In 2000 he won the first prize in the International Competition for staging and scenography in Graz. Since then David Hermann has worked for numerous German opera houses in Berlin, Nürnberg, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt among others. Furthermore he has directed several operas abroad, for example as the youngest director to date at the Salzburg Festival, and at the theatre of Luzern, the National Opera House of Amsterdam, in Nancy and at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
Trần Nhật Minh graduated in conducting from the National Conservatory of Magnitogorsk, the National Tschaikowski-Conservatory in Moscow and the Academy of Conductors of Milan. He received the second prize at the International Competition of Young Conductors in Wladiwostok in 2003. Trần Nhật Minh is choir leader and vice-head of opera at HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO). In 2009 he was awarded Best Conductor at the National Competition for Singing, Dancing and Music in Vietnam.

Exhibition “LIVINWONDR – Stars in Our Eyes: Creating a Sense of Place”
Opening: Fri 6 May 2016, 6 – 9 pm
Exhibition: 6 – 14 May 2016
Galerie Quỳnh
Level 2, 151/3 Dong Khoi, District 1, HCMC
Galerie Quynh is thrilled to launch the community-art project Livinwondr initiated and co-ordinated by artist Hung Viet Tran. The gallery will host a 9-day fundraising exhibition from the 6th to the 14th of May.
Comprising a sculptural structure made up of stainless-steel (inox) tubes that can be arranged in various permutations, LIVINWONDR is an interactive project, taking on configurational transformations in direct response to public surroundings. The shape-shifting nature of LIVINWONDR is not unlike how the name itself – and thus its meaning – can be deliberated upon along multiple avenues: the states of being immersed in wonder and beauty; of living with curiosity and an open mind; of recognizing living wonders – miracles or spectacles that are alive.
Curated by Tran, the submissions are varied in expression and discipline such as fine art, design, photography, illustration, sonic arts, comics, calligraphy, etc. – ‘anything that sparks imagination’). Celebrated artist Tiffany Chung, veteran photographer Thong Van Nguyen and comic book artist But Chi are among the 17 contributors to the project thus far.
