Live Roots Music with Matt Montez

Sat 14 Nov 2015, 8.30 pm

Hanoi Social Club

6 Hoi Vu Str, Hanoi

This Saturday, The Hanoi Social Club is proud to present Matt Montez. As well as at Hanoi’s own Quest Festival, he’s played Beat-Herder Festival, Little Big Gig Festival, Nimbin Roots Festival, Rock The Gate at Bryon Bay and toured throughout Europe and East Coast Australia. Yes, he’s played all these festivals because he’s very bloody good!

Breaking genre boundaries with acoustic-rock, roots, folk and reggae, he’ll lead you to spiritual introspection before summoning your feet to dance. Explosive live performances fueled by the atmosphere of the crowd, he feeds off the energy and flourishes in the feeling of connection.

Rather than writing structurally, Matt gives way to his feelings in the moment to guide the natural direction and progression for each song, while intertwining the lyrics with the melody. His music comes from the heart. Lyrically, each song has a spiritual meaning or a positive message to enlighten people through their daily lives.

Following the success of “Paris, je t’aime” in 2006, Emmanuel Benbihy continues to produce part 2 of the series “Love cities” with the second location of New York.

On this Friday, you are invited to the film screening “New York, I Love You” a collection of short films by famous director Fatih Akın as Brett Ratner, Shunji Iwai, Mira Nair, etc.

About the film

“NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU” is a 2008 American romantic comedy-drama anthology consisting of eleven short films, each by a different director. The short films all relate in some way to the subject of love, and are set among the five boroughs of New York City.

The film is a sequel of sorts to the 2006 film ‘Paris, je t’aime’, which had the same structure, and is the second film in the Cities of Love franchise, created and produced by Emmanuel Benbihy. Unlike ‘Paris, je t’aime’, the short films of “NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU” all have a unifying thread of a videographer who films the other characters.

The film stars an ensemble cast, among them Bradley Cooper, Shia LaBeouf, Natalie Portman, Anton Yelchin, Hayden Christensen, Orlando Bloom, Irrfan Khan, Rachel Bilson, Chris Cooper, Andy García, Christina Ricci, John Hurt, Cloris Leachman, Robin Wright Penn, Julie Christie, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, James Caan, Shu Qi and Eli Wallach.

“NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU” premiered at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2008, and was released in the United States on October 16, 2009.

Artist Talk with Asherah Cinnamon

Sun 15 Nov 2015, 6 pm

Nha San Collective’s new space

15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

Muong Studio & Nha San Collective would like to invite you to attend a talk with artist Asherah Cinnamon on an occasion that she has attended Muong AIR residency program held in November 2015 at Muong Studio. Asherah will talk about her experiences in art field, as an individual of Jewish community, as well as about pressure on a female artist that are challenging her by the role in society.

Asherah worked for two decades as an educator, trainer, and community builder, promoting inter-group cooperation and collaboration. In 1992 she received the New England United Methodist Award for Social Justice Actions. She has incorporated this healing and community building work into her installation and performance art. Using her own cultural heritage and personal history as a starting point, she invites broad public interaction and involvement into her projects. Asherah’s creative practice explores the power of human interaction to build community, and reaches for two primary goals from her Jewish tradition: seek justice (tzedek) and heal the world (tikkun olam).

During the talk, Asherah Cinnamon will share her experiences and pressures as a female artist in the art world, where males are the majority. The role that society places on women impacts how women work. It brings unique difficulties, strengths, and challenges.

Asherah Cinnamon is a contemporary sculptor, installation, and performance artist, who makes her home in a forest in the northeastern United States. She has had a long love affair with trees, and uses her own cultural traditions as a platform from which to begin each new project. Her work incorporates decades of activism for the rights of women and minorities. She will show examples of her projects and discuss her process for creating spaces to connect people with each other and the earth. Her sculpture can be seen currently in group exhibitions in New York and London.

The talk will be conducted in English. Vietnamese listeners will be assisted by our interpreter.

Six Space

6th floor, 94B Tran Hung Dao, Hanoi

Come to a special evening about the work of Ulises Carrión, and his passion for experimental books and publishing.

About Ulises Carrión:

Ulises Carrión (1941-1989) was an artist born in Mexico. He began as a writer, and later became regarded as Mexico’s first conceptual artist, working through video, books, text and performance. On his move to Europe in 1971, he began to take a deep interest in artists books. Making artists books himself, and collecting those of others, led to two things:

– He opened the first ever artist bookshop, Other Books and So, in Amsterdam in 1975. The space became known internationally as a vital cultural centre for exhibitions, collaborations, performances, and the making and publishing of artist’s books.

– In the same year, he published “The New Art of Making Books” – a major theoretical work on the subject of artist’s books. The text was first published in the art magazine Kontexts, and printed and distributed for free from the Centre for Book Arts in New York.

About the evening:

“The New Art of Making Books” has been published in five languages. This event will see the launch of the sixth – translated into Vietnamese for the first time, and distributed for free to all attendees.

The evening will also be the first Vietnamese screening of Carrión’s short film, “Bookworks Revisited”, part 1 (1979, 34min), in which he discusses his ideas around artist books, and showcases 72 publications from the Other Books and So archive.

Danang – Exhibition “Aspiration of Happiness” by Hoang Phuc Quy

Opening: Sun 15 Nov 2015, 4 pm

Exhibition: 15 – 25 Nov 2015

Da Nang Museum

78 Le Duan, Thach Thang, Hai Chau, Da Nang

Throughout the works are the emotional sublimation of man when they reach the “world of happiness” of their own, like a sweet song in the joyful emotions of the people with their overwhelming happiness.

The entire series are the scene of the people lost in daydreams floating high in the melodies of happiness among the lotus fields. Undulating people blending themselves in musical sublimation. They are singing passionately expressing their own happiness. When man gets the overwhelming happiness, it is when nature and the surroundings blend with each other to make a sweet song and it is at this moment when the musical instruments represented from stems of lotus leaves increases the abstraction of the sublimation of happiness.

Throughout the creation, I would like the viewer to feel the melodies of happiness of heart, ignoring all the troubles of daily life.

The creations are my own creative breakthrough on the concept of happiness. Through the creations I would like to express the surreal emotion on sublimation of happiness. And I would like to confirm that men and nature is a harmonious unity. And through my creations I would like to feel my world of happiness and hopefully somewhere from my creations they may find the sympathy with “standard of happiness” of their own.

In present societies, men have to race with the bustling life. They are gradually away from nature and they fail to appreciate the simple happiness around. Because of that, I would like my creation “The melody of happiness” to awaken the values that we may unintentionally neglect. The creations is the red thread which takes men and nature closer to each other. Hopefully, through the creations, the viewer can find their own happiness and treasure the wonderful things the creator has offered human beings.

Street Art Event “LIAR BEN & THE SUGARCANE LADY coming to HANOI”

Live mural painting at Hanoi Creative City: Sat 07 Nov 2015, 10 am

Artist talk: Sun 08 Nov 2015, 4.30 pm

Nha San COLLECTIVE
15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

Nha San Collective invites you to our event “LIAR BEN & THE SUGARCANE LADY coming to HANOI” on the first weekend of November. Considered as one of the most prominent street art figures, graffiti artist Liar Ben from Ho Chi Minh city will perform a live mural painting at Hanoi Creative City from 10 a.m on Saturday. It forms part of his art project “The Sugarcane lady” which started in 2014. On Sunday, Liar Ben will give an artist talk at Nha San Collective to share with Hanoi’s audience about his projects and his work as curator of Zero Station art space.

“The Sugarcane Lady” art project centers around Liar Ben’s collection of images depicting ‘sugarcane ladies’ that have previously been painted on the sugarcane juice kart in Vietnam. The search was structured in the form of collecting painted images and researching past documentation. It has inspired him to develop a series of distinctive mural painting in public spaces, based on the idea of the Sugarcane lady.

In Liar Ben’s point of view, this figure is also a cultural symbol where social values are manifested through a non-industrial kind of business. Such a figure of course has its own history, and more, a kind of memory and a historical part belonging to a particular community.”

Liar Ben (b. 1990) lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. He has practiced graffiti art for over 10 years. While attending the University of Fine Arts in Silk painting department, Liar Ben begun to work at Zero Station and became a curator of this space. In the cultural year celebrating diplomatic relationship between France and Vietnam in 2013, funded by Institut Francais Liar Ben collaborated with French artist Sautel Cargo to do a project of mural painting thorough Vietnam: in Hanoi, Sapa, Hai Phong, Hue, Da Lat and Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2014, Liar Ben realized his art project “The Sugarcane lady” during an artist residency at the Koganecho Bazzar in Yokohoma, Japan. In the same year, he participated in street art project “Urban Up” in Korea. In early 2015, Liar Ben continued his project with a mural painting in the neighborhood of Nguyen Cong Tru, Ho Chi Minh city. It belonged to the program “Art walk” organized by Sao La.

“Liar Ben & Sugarcane lady coming to Hanoi” event is sponsored by Hanoi Creative City.

Film Screening “Homostratus” and Talk with Filmmaker Siu Pham

Sat 07 Nov 2015, 7 pm
Nha San Collective’s new space
15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

Nha San Collective warmly invites you to the screening of “Homostratus” and talk with director Siu Pham. The filmmaker will share her point of views about cinema aesthetics and her new film project “The endless road” in post-production. It’s a cinematic journey to the death in searching for the paradise of youth on the highlands of northern Vietnam.

“Homostratus” gives a portrait of contemporary society of Ho Chi Minh City with a unique style filled of dynamism and humor. A city in explosive development. A magma of images reflects, without consistency, all ideals of consumption. In this confusion, a particular destiny could be a daily life of everybody: a grandmother is dying, a divorced woman who does not want to take care of her teenage child, an anxious father initiates his son earning his own living, etc… Many fragments like metaphoric paintings structured the movie. Human stratum became a surrealist poem.

Born in Hanoi, Siu Phạm studied Art History and Film Critique at the University of Geneva. She has been working in contemporary theatre and making various documentaries with Jean Luc Mello. Her first feature film “Here and There” was selected in the New Current section of the Busan International Film Festival in 2011. Her second feature film “Homostratus” won Best Unique Vision at the Queens World Film Festival in New York. She has also held painting exhibition entitled “Companion – Chair and Wind” in HCMC in 2014.

Exhibition “Conservation of Vitality” by Lai Dieu Ha

Exhibition: 01 – 15 Nov 2015
A4703, Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower A
E6 Pham Hung Rd., Hanoi

For some time now, Lai Dieu Ha has been a prominent name associated with performance art in Vietnam, in particular, with those performances that have received the most controversy in public opinion. Embedded in her often visceral acts are concerns with the threshold of pain, social constraints on the female body, and the possibilities of corporeal transformation.

“Conservation of Vitality” is a series of material explorations tied to themes of destruction, re-use, mythology, and exploration. Infused by a constellation of preoccupations, this is a collection of handcrafted objects driven by interests in the scientific, the mythological, and the ethnographic. It appears that the radical gestures of Ha’s previous performances, challenging the artist’s own psychosomatic thresholds, have found another conduit in a craft-based project that nonetheless draws together interrelated contemplation on cycles of life and death, creation and destruction, as though attempting to transport the artist back to an age of innocence.

Lai Dieu Ha (b. 1976) is now currently living and working in Hanoi. After numerous renowned career developments in performing art since 2006, Ha now has taken on a new phase in her artistic development as a visual artist. Conservation of Vitality is her first solo exhibition and with CUC Gallery, supported by CDEF.

08 and 09 Nov 2015, 8 pm
HCMC Opera House
No. 7 Lam Son Square, D.1, HCMC

Georges Bizet’s opera CARMEN is one the most famous, successful and most performed operas in history. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy based on the Prosper Mérimée’s novel of the same name.

Opera CARMEN will be performed at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on November 8th and 9th, 2015. Being a featured program in the 2015 performing season, the production is a great effort from HBSO. Leading the premiere performance is the French Maestro Patrick Souillot. The performance will also feature French opera artists Sophie Leleu and Olivier Trommenschlager in the roles of Carmen and Don Jose, respectively.

As HBSO has done with Mozart’s THE MAGIC FLUTE, the Ho Chi Minh City premiere of CARMEN will be presented in concert, with its emphasis on the musical aspect of the piece.

Performers in the production also include HBSO’s best opera artists such as Cho Hae Ryong, Mer. A. Tran Hong Vy, Pham Duyen Huyen, Pham Khanh Ngoc, Nguyen Thu Huong, Vo Nguyen Thanh Tam, Dao Mac, Phan Huu Trung Kiet… and the HBSO Choir and Symphony Orchestra.

This year, 2015, marks the 140th anniversary of the CARMEN’s debut as well as the 140th death anniversary of Georges Bizet, the opera’s composer. Bizet passed away suddenly 3 months after the debut of CARMEN and never got to experience its popularity and great success of the work. In 1938, on the celebration of Bizet’s 100th birthday, the Opéra-Comique theatre had had 2,271 performances of the opera. Concert “Ludwig van Beethoven” at Goethe Institut in November

07 and 08 Nov 2015, 8 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

This year, on the 245th birthday of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, the Goethe-Institut presents a four-part concert series at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi. The ten sonatas for violin and piano will be performed by the renowned musicians Nguyen My Huong and Dao Trong Tuyen.

On 7 and 8 November, the audience can enjoy three sonatas, including Sonata No. 5, which is widely known as the “Spring Sonata” due to its cheerful and hopeful mood.

However, it wasn’t Beethoven himself who came up with this name. In fact, his life was everything but easy when he finished the sonata in 1801: Beethoven had just found out that his hearing troubles were no temporary problem, but that he would go deaf. Other works which he composed during this time resonate his fear and despair about his fate.

Beethoven has brought the Classical form to its highest expressive level and he is considered as a pioneer of Romanticism. With his sonatas for violin, composed between 1797 and 1812, he was following his role model Mozart, who recognized the violin as an equal partner for the piano for the first time. Furthermore, Beethoven’s sonata are known for their unconventional modulations and rhythms, which first shocked the audience, but after a while it was seen as the own course of the great classic composer.

Around 200 years later you can experience this complete exceptional music cycle for the first time in Hanoi – an exceedingly occasion for lovers of music.

PROGRAM
– Sonata No. 1 in D major, Opus 12
– Sonata No. 3 in E-flat major, Opus 12
– Sonata No. 5 in F major, Opus 24

“The Canterville Ghost” in Vietnam

Adapted from Oscar Wilde’s story
By Paul Stebbings and Phil Smith
Music: Paul Flush
Director: Paul Stebbings
Producer: Grantly Marshall
Hanoi: Tue 03 Nov 2015, 8 pm
Wed 04 Nov 2015, 11 am
Labor Theatre

HCMC: Thu 05 Nov 2015, 11 am
HCMC Conservatory of Music

In autumn 2015 we revive one of the company’s most popular productions for a tour of over twenty countries in Europe and Asia. “THE CANTERVILLE GHOST” is an enigmatic masterpiece from one of the greatest story tellers ever to set pen to paper: Oscar Wilde. Being Wilde this is a piece of razor sharp wit, vicious satire and imagery that is both Gothic and lyrical. TNT brings out the full complexity of the story, a story that is wrongly labelled as solely for the young. And of course we update the satire as Wilde was nothing if not contemporary (he seldom sets his work in the past).

The story is set in an English castle whose aristocratic owner, Lord Canterville, has put up for sale as he is as broke as he is noble. The resident crows object to this as strongly as the resident Ghost (the wife murderer Sir Simon de Canterville). A brash and wealthy American family arrives to take possession of the castle: a cowgirl mom, a seemingly sweet daughter Virginia and her vile brother Washington. The Ghost does all he can to frighten the Americans away, but in the end it is the Duke who turns the tables by falling in love with Virginia. But first Virginia must learn a lesson or two from Sir Simon – if she is to have a Ghost of a chance…

TNT’s version has delighted audiences since 1997, from Shanghai to London and Munich to Tokyo. The combination of dynamic physical theatre, dance, comedy, masks, satire, audience participation and startling imagery grips young and old alike. The whole is complimented by Paul Flush’s musical score and a host of foot tapping songs plus a ballad or two to mix laughter with tears (or at least romance). TNT theatre and ADG Europe invite you to a magical theatrical performance in the company of yanks, ghosts, lovers, murderers, Lords, gypsies, horrible stains and the bad tempered dancing crows of Canterville.

“TNT – a theatrical firework.” – Berliner Morgenpost.

“TNT – touring theatre at its best.” – South China Morning Post.

“If young people need to be persuaded to go to the theatre this is the company to
see.” – Sudkurier, Germany.

“TNT presents true music theatre.” – Classical Music Magazine, London

Exhibition “The New Global Women” by Lawrence D’Attilio

Opening: Sun 01 Nov 2015, 5.30 pm
Exhibition: 01 – 14/11/2015
Heritage Space
Dolphin Plaza, 28 Tran Binh, My Dinh, Ha Noi

Seventy-nine visual art works of artist photographer Lawrence D’Attilio explore the tensions of young women when having to make difficult choices in life. They will be presented in the exhibition “The New Global Women”. The opening reception is at 17:30 through 20:00 and the artist will be there and a featured guest artist, American violinist Pamela Foard, will perform for you too while refreshments are served. Mrs. Foard is the wife of Mr. D’Attilio.

The exhibition consists of 32 single fine art photographs surrounding a centerpiece installation art work entitled “Challengers”. The installation art work is made up of 24 ceramic photographs of women faces and 23 transparent photographs of Ao Dai. The structure has a conical hat shape, 4.87m diameter, 3.2m tall with transparent photographs and cloth strip suspended in the structure. The installation allows people to walk into the structure up to the edges of the ceramic tiles placed on the floor.

As a mid-career artist, Lawrence has always been interested in breaking current trends in his art media. The exhibit “The New Global Women” is a typical example. The exhibit uses camera-made images re-constructed into abstract expressions as well as a cross media installation work to challenge orthodox concepts of photographic presentation. All of the art works explore the women’s tensions with their own twisting of form, color and elements of minimal narrative.

During nine years in Vietnam, Lawrence has become friends with many young educated women. They have told him about their challenges in making the life-long decisions that they are pressured to confront now. Some of the woman chose to accept the tensions in their lives, a result of their choice to pursue their lives beyond the previous traditional roles. Other women conclude that they prefer a lifestyle that is more comfortable for them and more easily accepted in their current culture.

Lawrence wanted to recognize the tensions women had while making their choices from among the greater options they have today. His idea was to create a sense of the tensions through abstraction while confronting difficult artistic choices of form.

Lawrence D’Attilio is a native of New York City and currently resides in Los Angeles and Milwaukee. He has a Fine art degree from the University of Louisville and did independent studies with Ansel Adams. He has exhibited since 1970 in Vietnam, Malaysia, Italy, and The U.S.A. He co-founded The Bathhouse Gallery of photography in 1970 and was president of The Photography Collectors investment fund. He taught photography in extensions of the University of Wisconsin, Madison and others.

Lawrence is also a successful co-plaintiff in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision involving civil liberties for people of African and Jewish heritage. Further, Lawrence had a 31 year professional music career as a bassoon player for three different major American Symphony Orchestras. He is also an aircraft pilot and was founder and president of Airdance, Inc., the management and FBO for Capital Drive Airport, (02C). Prior to that he was the founder of the Bellanca – Champion Club providing technical support for aircraft of those brands.
