During his time in Ho Chi Minh City, Mat – along with Tran Minh Duc and Dao Tung – initiated the group exhibition “Howdy Cowboy” at DIA Projects. “Howdy Cowboy” collides fragments of historical events, personal experiences and contemporary Vietnamese narratives to create an engaged installation of objects and video. “Howdy Cowboy” will travel to New Zealand in February 2016 for showcase during the Wellington International Festival of the Arts.

Premiere of “The Fisherman and His Wife” adapted by Einar Schleef
Opening night: Sat 28 Nov 2015, 8 pm
Further performance: Sun 29 Nov 2015, 8 pm
Youth Theatre
11 Ngo Thi Nham, Hanoi
After last year’s successful cooperation, the Goethe-Institut Hanoi, the Youth Theatre Hanoi and the tjg. theater junge generation from Dresden will present a new, joint theatre project this year. The play will be the popular fairytale “The Fisherman and His Wife” in the act version by Einar Schleef, again under the guidance of German director Dominik Günther. In this theatre production for children, Vietnamese and German culture will meet and interact with the story in a playful and creative way.
The co-production will be put on stage with three different casts: In Vietnam, the performances will be in Vietnamese, but will also incorporate German children and their language via integrated video clips. In Germany, the theatre play will be put on stage in German language, for children over six years. As a special highlight, “The Fisherman and His Wife” will be performed in a German-Vietnamese version in April 2016 in Dresden, with Vietnamese actors and German puppeteers.
“The Fisherman and His Wife” is a popular fairytale in both Vietnam and Germany, dealing with greed and illustrating worldly wisdom. Einar Schleef’s act version of this classical fairytale tells the story of a fisherman who lives in a small cottage, together with his wife Ilsebill. He is quite satisfied with their simple life, but his wife is not. One day, the fisherman catches a flounder, which implores the fisherman to give him his life, for he is really a bewitched prince. When Ilsebill hears of this, she is shocked her husband did not ask the prince for a wish to be granted in return for his life. Contrary to her husband, Ilsebill has an indefinite list of wishes. She pushes her husband to call the flounder again, and behold: The magical fish grants her wish for a real house. But Ilsebill does not settle for a house – a palace she must have, she wants to be Queen, then Empress, ruler of the world! With every wish, the sea gets rougher, and in the end everything is back like it used to be…

Arts Exhibition and Auction “Lang’s House – Dream of Rebirth”
Opening: Mon 23 Nov 2015, 2 pm
Talkshow with Phan Cam Thuong and Thanh Chuong: Artworks introduction: Tue 24 Nov 2015, 9 am
Exhibition: 23 – 25 Nov 2015
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum
66 Nguyen Thai Hoc St. Hanoi
Lang’s house – Dream of Rebirth is a crowd-funding campaign to rebuild the ancient Lang house, the unique house of the Muong’s Land Lord in Hoa Binh, Vietnam. The
house was burned down by tourists at the end of 2013.
Until now, there have been big concerns over the fire on 24 October 2013 at The Muong’s Cultural Museum. It was careless of a tourist group to ignite the flame, destroyed
an over-100-year-old Lang house, and hundreds of antiquities. To those who have spent a lot of time and effort establishing and managing the museum, it is such a huge
loss. The destroyed area of Lang house had remained intact for investigation and evaluation of damage until one day when the authority informed that they would temporarily
stop investigating the case. During that time, we were awaiting for support and assistance from local authorities and culture departments in restoring the damaged parts.
One year after the fire, considerable effort and work has being put in. Looking at the ashes, and charred remains, we, who built and took care of the museum, was strongly
driven with new inspiration and design. We decided that we would continue to tell a story about the new journey of Lang House: a story of a rebirth. Thanks to the data &
blueprints kept in the museum, and the sharing of some Muong workers installing Lang House in 2007, we will be able to restore the house with all original with some
remained poles and wooden floor.
We can almost see the dream that we are dreaming. Our artists and friends are eagerly preparing for some arts events, which are going to take place in Hanoi from
beginning of 2015. The events, along with a series of activities related to ticket selling, fundraising auction, seminars, and open calls in social media are within the
contribution plan. Ideas are given, and then implemented by our beloved artists.
It is a Fashion, Painting and Installation exhibition will be held at Module 7 art space, Hanoi, at the beginning of May 2015.
It is a Photography exhibition of an artist group at Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in June 2015.
It is a big Art Exhibition and Auction of more than 80 works by 50 artists in Vietnam at the end of 2015.
Moreover, for raising voice and hands from society, we are holding an online crowd-funding on the official pages of the Muong’s Cultural Museum.
All artworks by artists contributed into the fund for rebuilding the Lang’s house will be displayed in this exhibition. These are valuable contributions by artist’s creations and
labors, for a dream to rebuild a cultural heritage. We truly appreciate these kindness and supports. To be honest, the restoration of Lang House aims at not only the
museum and those being there, but also the public. Voice could be raised, and confidence could be added to preserve and promote the values of our national culture.

A series of watercolor paintings on paper with simple beauty and a little bit of defiance exuded from the surface… They will be once again manipulated manually by the artist to create different perspectives.
Thanh Vinh knows how to methodical implement his ideas from simple thoughts. Everything is moderated and strategic. And we look forward to how the artist resolves his methods in a familiar and conditional space, with canvas, easels and paints…
About the artists:

Thanh Vinh is a multimedia artist who frequently combines a variety of media in his practice such as: painting, printmaking, animation, artist book, installation and performance. His work often explores the limitations of the traditional technique to find new possibilities in contemporary art representation.
Born in 1988 in Hanoi, Vietnam, Thanh Vinh defined himself as the youngest generation of Vietnamese artist who reflect his national’s phenomena, like the political and cultural history within the context of globalization.
“ I often see cliché Romanticism images of our generation. They are facing with ambiguity between traditional culture and mass media influences or globalization that rapidly changes. How to identify yourself? Where is the Vietnamese identity? Is that already blurred or still exists somewhere underneath? What is the value of the individual in contemporary life?”.

Thanh Vinh knows how to methodical implement his ideas from simple thoughts. Everything is moderated and strategic. And we look forward to how the artist resolves his methods in a familiar and conditional space, with canvas, easels and paints…
Exhibition “Puzzle of Life” by Hoang Nguyen Khanh Linh
Opening: Sat 21 Nov 2015, 5 pm
Exhibition: 21 – 30 Nov 2015
Exhibition Hall
29 Hang Bai, Hanoi
You are invited to exhibition “Puzzle of Life” by young talent artist Hoang Nguyen Khanh Linh.
Hoang Nguyen Khanh Linh can be considered a “blossoming young painter” as she opens her first exhibition with more than thirty oil artworks, painted from the age of 15 to 17.
She views the outside world with the optimistic eyes of a youngster, with a bright future as an artist ahead of her. She is following the path of generations of Vietnamese artists with both accolades and challenges at the same time. Khanh Linh chose the same road as her farther, painter Hoang Dinh who accomplished in both graphics and painting. It is likely that Khanh Linh has inherited her father’s artistic genes! She has not gone to any art school nor art courses, but paints with her instincts. This highlights her exceptional gift as a painter.
The thirty works by Khanh Linh all display traits of a natural gift. They promise great talent in the future if her passion and determination are nurtured through the process of training.
In all forms of arts, artists will have to make a painful journey in order to rise to the top. For painters, the journey is particularly challenging. Apart from possessing an artistic soul, the painter should have deep knowledge of graphics, composition and specialized techniques. These techniques take much time and effort to master, while the painter “wrestles” with the “tools of trade” such as colors, canvases, frames, easels and brushes.
A vibrant artwork requires many different elements, ranging from the composition, colors, lines to shapes. However, the most important and difficult, perhaps, is to portray space. Real but unreal, unreal drawn from real. Although Khanh Linh still needs time to develop her techniques, the “space” is always filled.
Five paintings have been selected to form her “five blessings”. These are “Life in the Suburbs”, “River from Homeland”, “Wild Nature”, “Parched Fish” and “Midnight City”. In the two paintings “Life in the Suburbs” and “River from Homeland”, Linh depicted the Nature so vividly just like a professional artist. The painting “Wild Nature” is also a beautiful piece, which has both abstract and realistic elements, which are now used by many professional painters. The “Life in the Suburbs” is unique. In fact, few artists would dare to paint such a landscape since there is nothing “special” about two monotonous apartment blocks covered with tin roofing, a yard wet in rain, and a rising sun. She has used dark and bright tones for the roofing, while highlighting some drying laundry and an electricity pole in the background for this simple urban scene. But the work has a strong focus with Khanh Linh’s use of black brushstrokes for the two doors. The yellowish sky is freely dotted, giving the painting charm. The painting “River from Homeland” is romantic. The river has a familiar touch; it could the Cau River or the Nhue River. Bamboo borders the wharf, while water plants “Luc Binh” float on the water.
Although Khanh Linh has a child’s playfulness with her brushes, she infuses her soul in her paintings, which gives them maturity far beyond her years. These initial successes will lay a springboard for her future. Natural gifts, once activated and nurtured will definitely grow into real talent.
HCMC – Lacquer Painting Exhibition “One Happy World” by Nguyen Thi Mai
Exhibition: 23 – 31 Jan 2016, 9 am – 5 pm (from Tuesday to Sunday)
HCMC Fine Arts Museum
Nguyen Thi Mai’s journey through art began in 2004. It has essentially been a happy and pleasant one. Having undergone no formal training in art, Mai’s emotion became her art teacher, guiding and steering her in a direction that no art institute, however renowned and accomplished, could have done.
“One Happy World” is Mai’s first solo exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City and is a flashback of some of her best works as well as featuring some of her latest work since her last solo exhibition in Hanoi in 2014.
From her beginning in 2004 to her first major solo exhibition “Roots” in 2012 and the following “Femme” in 2014, the underlying tenet of her work has been joy and happiness, with festivals and celebrations a major theme in her paintings. Mai believes that people are predominantly optimistic and cheerful in outlook, preferring to enjoy and celebrate life.
On a visual level, Mai uses a lot of neutral colors: grey, brown, dark green, bronze, etc… Coupled with the faded color of unpolished lacquer, these colors give Mai’s work a very rustic and rough look.
Another notable feature of her work is the use of the feminine form. The bow of a boat, or the side of a vase, somehow reminds us of the curvaceous form of a lady.
Mai’s work tends to celebrate nature and the traditional, and we can find plenty of tribal motifs and
symbols in her paintings, such as the well known Dong Son drum of Vietnam.
A less obvious aspect of Mai’s art is the influence of music. Mai is very much attracted by the beats and rhythms of music genres like country, rock and even rap. As an artist guided by the purity of her emotion, the music naturally ends up in her paintings, where Mai recreates the beats and rhythms of the music in a visual form.
Mai’s art cannot be easily classified. Combining abstraction with a very traditional Vietnamese technique – lacquer, she adds a further twist to it by leaving her lacquer pieces unpolished! The best way to experience her art is to see it up close.

HCMC – Exhibition “In Opposite 2” by Ngo Van Sac
Opening: Fri 20 Nov 2015, 6 pm
Exhibition: 20 Nov – 09 Dec 2015
Craig Thomas Gallery
27i Tran Nhat Duat, Tan Dinh ward, Q.1, HCMC
Come to enjoy “In Opposite 2”, a solo exhibition of collage and mixed media paintings on canvas by Hanoi-based artist Ngo Van Sac.
Best known for his distinctive wood burn paintings which often featured multiple self-portraits in the previous exhibitions “In The Midst of Life” and “In The Midst of Life 2”, Ngo Van Sac has taken a somewhat surprising but ultimately successful turn in choosing to work in the medium of collage and mixed media with his latest collection. The result is a series of ethereal and arresting works that show the artist turning his gaze outwards while masterfully engaging with new mediums.
Of his latest collection, Sac says: “The Earth’s components have always had close ties with each other. In such an environment, the relationships between human beings and the natural world is no exception to this rule. In creating this series, I wanted to highlight the interesting contrasts between the existences of people and nature. Rather than focusing on high concepts, I paint the simple things happening around me with events that I and everyone else face each day. Behind that are the reactions in relation to each event that my viewers point out.”
Ngo Van Sac (b. 1980) is a graduate of the Vietnam Fine Arts University. Born in a rural village on the outskirts of Hanoi, Sac has witnessed the constant encroachment of urban development into what was once a bucolic environment. “In Opposite 2” is the artist’s attempt to find a symbiosis between human kind and their constructions and the natural world and its creatures.
HN & HCMC – Stand-Up Comedy with Jonathan Atherton
HCMC: Wed 25 Nov 2015, 8 pm
Game On

Hanoi: Thu 26 Nov 2015, 8 pm
House of Son Tinh
Over the past few months, the international stand-up comedy coming to Vietnam has been making all you good folks out there laugh your socks off. And being the kind souls that the organisers are, they are now flying in the father of stand-up in Southeast Asia: Jonathan Atherton. A veteran of the comedy scene and former presenter of Lonely Planet, the Australian artist will be performing on Wednesday November 25 (HCMC) and Thursday November 26 (Hanoi).
There have been other players promoting comedy in this region, but Jonathan Atherton was responsible for establishing the genre in Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and even Saigon. Yes, this guy’s on a mission — although we suspect it’s not one from God. Man at the helm of Comedy Club Asia, and now with his own venue in Kuala Lumpur, the Crackhouse, Atherton first came to these fine climes in the 1990s. With 10 languages under his belt — he speaks them fluently, mind you — and boasting acting roles alongside none other than Robin Williams, this versatile and dynamic comic is set to light up the stages of Vietnam and have you peeing your pants. This guy is funny, so bring your catheters!
Of course, no show in this country is complete without the support, and coming all the way from the tropical paradise of Poland will be another man of firsts, Peter Szumowski. A young, talented comedian, Peter’s five years on stage and national TV has seen him win a number of Polish awards.
Also popping over for the Saigon show will be American, Phnom Penh-based gagster, Sam Thomas. Hailing from a place called Boston, Sam brough his flair for stand-up to Phnom Penh three years ago.
And of course, as ever in Hanoi there will be the story-telling jokesters and magicians from Hanoi Comedy Collective. If you’ve seen them before, then take them in again. With so much comedy heading to the capital, and with you as the guinea pigs, they’re constantly writing new material.

HCMC – Exhibition “1972-2015: Works by Hoang Duong Cam and Trong Gia Nguyen”
Opening: Thu 19 Nov 2015, 6 pm
Exhibition: 19 Nov – 19 Dec 2015
Galerie Quynh
Level 2, 151/3 Dong Khoi, Dist 1, HCMC
Come to exhibition “1972-2015: Works by Hoang Duong Cam and Trong Gia Nguyen”.
In this two-person exhibition, Hoang and Nguyen contend with issues of movement, displacement, refuge, and migration. Hoang’s atmospheric paintings reference the period around 1972, when his parents married and many Vietnamese were forced to leave their homes. With a simple Google search of ‘1972 Vietnam’, Hoang uses a pinhole camera to reshoot the result images, particularly those that exhibit a sense of fleeing. He then repaints them in monochrome, dotting them with mental abstractions of puzzled color, giving fragmented context to an already blurry time in his history, just before the artist was born. Personal memory and stories of childhood fantasies are interwoven, as the artist celebrates with characteristic irony a dramatic period of Vietnam’s recent history.
Similarly, Nguyen’s recent relocation to Ho Chi Minh City from New York City re-shapes personal notions of home and domestic space. His playful yet charged sculptures superimpose an uneasy American Dream over the Saigon landscape. In one work, the iconic ‘white picket fence’ gets reconfigured into a ‘modular yellow picket fence’, contoured to resemble a hashtag symbol. Nguyen’s ‘landscaping’ dislocates and casts a movable shadow over all that is seemingly fixed. Another work called ‘Wash in the
Rain’ features a clothes rack and poncho made from raw materials that a painting might comprise of: canvas, wood, metal fasteners. The rain poncho made out of raw canvas and the wooden coat rack shortened to only hold the one cloak are rendered as impractical household items. The traditional format of a rectangular canvas stretched on wooden bars is no longer applicable – and therefore convention in general – to frame or give context to the usual practices and foreign nature of ‘language’ in Vietnam.

Photography Exhibition “The Soul of Vietnam” by Lawrence D’Attilio
Opening: Sun 22 Nov 2015, 3 pm
Exhibition: 22 Nov – 13 Dec 2015
Work Room Four
24th floor, Packexim Building, lane 15, An Duong Vuong Str, Tay Ho, Hanoi
This is the fifth time, the photography project “The Soul of Vietnam” by the multi-talented American artist, Lawrence D’Attilio, is introduced to the public in Vietnam and the US. Two first exhibitions took place respectively in 2008 at Studio Tho and Vietnam Fine Arts Museum. Two subsequent exhibitions were organized by the Tamarack Gallery (Madison, Wisconsin, curator John Riggs, 2012) and the Museum of the Gulf (The Museum of the Gulf Coast, Texas, USA, 2014).
The exhibition showcases some 35 photographs taken during 2007 – 2015, during which he has lived each year from 3 to 6 months in Vietnam. The three main themes of this exhibition are landscapes, characters and different moments, to express his feelings about, and viewpoints on, a changing of a country of boundless energy, including images representing women who have normal appearance but hide an extremely intense vitality and distinction.
The photos were edited on a computer, but not changed much, then printed in limited edition at his studio in America on five special photograph materials. They were also recorded by the number in each edition. This approach helps to bring the best appearance for every photo in the show.
The team Work Room Four and photographer Lawrence D’Attilio have the honor to introduce to you to the exhibition “The Soul of Vietnam”, with 35 images altogether according to classic techniques. This is a pleasant surprise because it was held after the exhibition titled “The New Global Women” (from November 1st to 14th, 2015, at Heritage Space, Hanoi), showcased his works of experimental photography and graphic design based on the concept of exploring the tensions of Vietnam women in a new life under pressure.
When using the methods of traditional photography, the biggest challenge for Lawrence D’Attilio is how to escape the framework of a tourist photo or a souvenir postcard; it is beautiful but completely similar to countless images of other photographers. Thanks to the eagerness of a curious person, subtleness and sincerity of an experienced heart, Lawrence D’Attilio seems to have overcome this challenge lightly. He shortened the path to communicate with the people and landscapes of Vietnam by his deep sympathy for the land. Through a microloan project to support people in Lap Thach District, Vinh Phuc province which he directly supported, he learned the story of the life and attitudes of people living in Vietnam, especially of Vietnamese women. Their braveness and courage in facing difficulties and their ethics have become a solid prop for the family. They more or less changed him and inspired his family members to come to Vietnam for new work and new life.
Details and colors in contrast, moments which he could hardly expect to keep in the photographic lens helped the artist to express many things within his soul, as well as the outside of each frame. He writes:
“Getting back to the idea of the soul of a country, maybe the place that reveals my own soul, as I attempt to understand the roots of what I experienced through the camera. I have no comment on that because I doubt if I can understand all that is inside me. However I can say that my life has been very enriched by the culture, people, history, and land in Vietnam. It has re-defined me in ways I could not have dreamed of before I first arrived in Vietnam in 2006.”
Lawrence D’Attilio and the team Work Room Four are looking forward to welcoming the public to this exhibition, sharing and searching again their own definitions of “The Soul of Vietnam”.
About the artist:
Lawrence D’Attilio is a native of New York City and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. He has a bachelor fine art degree from the University of Louisville and did independent studies in art and photography with Ansel Adams, and Professor Fred Berman. He has exhibited as an independent studio artist since 1970 in Vietnam, Malaysia, Italy, and The U.S.A. He co-founded The Bathhouse Gallery of photography in 1970 and was founder/president of The Photography Collectors investment fund and gallery in 1979. He taught photography in extensions of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, The Milwaukee Center of Photography, Cardinal Stritch University and The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts.
Lawrence is also an aircraft pilot and was founder and president of Airdance, Inc. as well as managing FBO for Capital Drive Airport, (02C). Prior to that he was the founder of the Bellanca – Champion Club providing technical support for aircraft of those brands. He is also a successful co-plaintiff in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision involving civil liberties for people of African and Jewish heritage. Furthermore, Lawrence had a 31 year professional music career as a bassoon player for three different major American Symphony Orchestras.

The exhibition is inpired by “kệ.” — an attitude of ignoring and abandonment among youth in Vietnam toward what is called foundation and traditional. This attitude is often criticized as irresponsibility but at the same time it reflects a readiness of shift-making among young people in Vietnam.
The exhibition features artworks in form of publication or book form. Although artists book has been a major pillar among movements of contemporary art, it is lesser known in Vietnam due to the lack of information on international art movements and the restriction of independent publishing in the country. This exhibition hopes to bring the work to Vietnamese audience to show them how artists – artwork – and audience can interact with one another in a non-traditional way, when the artwork could be in the hands of the audience and not in a traditional display method.
Opening hours: from Wed-Sun, from 10:00-12:00am & 14:00-18:00pm at Nhà Sàn Collective space, No. 1 Lương Yên, 15F, Hanoi Creative City, Hà Nội.
Curatorial walk through (in English) at 1 pm on Nov 14, 2015.
For other education programs of the exhibition, please see more in Vietnamese version of this post.

Techno Concert with the “Brandt Brauer Frick” from Berlin in European Music Festival 2015
Hanoi: Wed 18 Nov 2015, 8 pm
Worker Theatre
—
HCMC: Thu 19 Nov 2015, 8 pm
HCMC Conservatory of Music
For over 10 years, the European Music Festival has been an important cultural bridge between Europe and Vietnam. This year, seven artists and bands from a total of seven countries will offer the audiences musical diversity of highest quality. The Goethe-Institut proudly presents this year’s opening act in Hanoi, the German techno ensemble
“Brandt Brauer Frick”.
With their combination of classic instruments and repetitive techno patterns, the three musicians Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick shape their very own style. The combination of electronic soundscapes with harp, cello, contrabass and vibraphone challenges the audience.
Since their formation in 2008, the ensemble has changed: While only working with samples of classical instruments in the beginning, Brandt Brauer Frick now performs with up to ten musicians on stage, showing the ambitiousness of their project. The unique music experience has wowed audiences all over the world. The band has already played at Lincoln Center New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as at many festivals in Germany, England and California. In Vietnam, Brandt Brauer Frick will perform in their original line-up of three musicians, and make techno and classic meet in an extraordinary way.
