Associate Professor Vuong Thi Ngoc Lan, Vice Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, has been appointed as the sole Asian representative on the core team of authors developing the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2025 Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management of Infertility.

According to the university, this marks the world’s first comprehensive set of guidelines dedicated to the field of reproductive health and assisted reproduction.

Associate Professor Lan’s involvement not only affirms Vietnam’s competence in in-vitro fertilization (IVF), but also signifies a pivotal step in enhancing the voice of Vietnamese medicine on the global map of healthcare leadership.

Previously, Associate Professor Lan held several key academic positions including Dean of the School of Medicine and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the university. She currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Ho Chi Minh City Medical Journal and sits on the editorial board of Fertility and Reproduction, the official journal of ASPIRE - the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction. She also contributed to the WHO’s earlier guidelines on infertility care for couples.

Associate Professor Lan is the author or co-author of more than 80 scientific publications and research studies published in prestigious medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Human Reproduction, Fertility & Sterility, Reproductive BioMedicine Online, Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, BMJ, and Frontiers in Endocrinology.

Born in 1971, Lan earned her MD from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, followed by a master’s degree in clinical embryology at the National University of Singapore. She successfully defended her PhD in obstetrics and gynecology at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy and was appointed Associate Professor in 2019.

In 2020, she was one of three scientists honored with the prestigious Ta Quang Buu Award.

In 2021, Asian Scientist magazine (Singapore) listed her among the top 100 outstanding researchers in Asia.

She is also the daughter of Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, former Director of Tu Du Hospital, who played a significant role in advancing reproductive health in Vietnam.
