On November 20, VietNamNet’s reporters traveled along National Highway 1A, the section in Chau Thanh A district of Hau Giang province, where we saw locals selling hundreds of birds along the road.
The price for a Moorcock is VND 70,000 ($3.5) and only VND300,000 ($15) for six moor-hens. Boucals are more expensive, from VND400,000 to VND600,000 ($20-30)/bird.
According to bird sellers, they set snares on the field at night to catch birds. Most species of birds are processed as food. Only boucals are soaked in alcohol as medicine so they are more expansive than other birds.
Notably, wild birds are sold publicly.
On the way to Can Tho City, wild birds are also sold along the road.
Local people said selling wild birds have been taken place for years but local authorities could not control this illegal activity.
