Director of Tien Giang Province Health Department Tran Thanh Thao yesterday confirmed that the three pregnant women received medical examinations at Tan Phuoc District Healthcare Centre early last month and were informed that they were at risk of losing the pregnancies.
They were prescribed Miprotone, a kind of medicine used to strengthen fetal health. But medical workers in the pharmacy and obstetric departments of the district healthcare centre accidentally gave them Misoprostol, a medication used to start labour, cause an abortion, prevent and treat stomach ulcers, and treat postpartum bleeding due to poor contraction of the uterus.
Two of the three pregnant women suffered from stomach aches and vaginal bleeding after a day of taking the medicine. One fetus reportedly miscarried while the other continued developing thanks to timely intervention and treatment.
The third pregnant woman from Bac Lieu Province never took the medicine because she recognised the mistake.
On Monday, thanhnien.vn reported that pregnant women receiving care at the Tan Phuoc District Healthcare Centre had mistakenly received abortion pills. The Heath Ministry on Tuesday asked Tien Giang Province Health Department to verify and report about the case.
