VietNamNet Bridge – After six months of treatment at the Hue Central Hospital in the ancient capital city of Hue, a Can Tho woman who lost her kidneys in an operation, was transplanted with a new kidney.

Dr. Bui Duc Toan, the hospital director told correspondents on the afternoon of July 11--that after a 10-hour operation, Ms. Hua Cam Tu, 37, could breathe and eat.

Last December, Tu was taken by her husband to the Thoi Lai General Hospital for a clinical examination. Doctors in the hospital said that her kidney had failed and that she needed surgery and should be moved to the Can Tho General Hospital for an operation.

At Can Tho General Hospital, doctors said that Tu’s right kidney was functioning properly but her left kidney had failed and needed to be removed.

On December 6, Dr. Tran Van Nguyen, head of the Kidney Department operated on Tu to remove her left kidney.

Soon after the surgery, Tu’s husband noticed his wife’s health was still not good and decided to take her for an ultrasound test. He was shocked to discover that both her kidneys had been removed and he immediately rushed her to an intensive care unit.

Tu’s husband complained to the hospital and on December 8 Dr. Nguyen met Tu’s husband and explained the case.

Dr. Nguyen explained that during the surgery he had accidentally torn Tu’s right kidney and could not stop the bleeding, so he had to remove both of her kidneys. He said that it was important to save the patient from heavy bleeding which was not stopping during the surgery.

Dr. Phu of the Hue Central Hospital said that Tu’s case was a very rare medical incident in Vietnam. A similar case happened 30 years ago.

Tu experienced two operations on July 10 and 11. Doctors said that she would have been under doctor watch for a period of time.

Earlier, she was treated at the Can Tho General Hospital for free and moved to the Hue Central Hospital on January 4 to wait for a suitable kidney.
